Chapter9

Silver

Ifelt numb all over. Silence was filling the car as one of the mysteries from my past had been presented with an answer. I had cried for weeks over that rumor until Sam Messinger had done the honorable thing and told everyone he had no idea who in the hell I was.

“Silver, please say something,” Kelton mumbled from the driver seat of the car.

“You’re a horrible fucking human,” I couldn’t stop the words from tumbling from my lips.

He winced.

“I deserve that,” he nodded. “I am. I ….”

“Why in the fuck would you tell Henry that shit…who by the way, never had a chance. But like why…I don’t understand.”

“I wanted revenge, Silver. For all the times we’d been at each other’s throats. And…”

My hand was in a fist and I wanted to black his goddamned eye.

“I need to go in,” I shook my head, looking at the clock in his car.

“Silver…”

“Thank you for coming clean, Kelton but…I just…”

“Silver I’ve always had a thing for you!”

Kelton had just word vomited and I swear there was sweat all across his face. He looked whiter than usual. His hand trembled as he reached for the bottle of water sitting in the middle console. Watching as he opened it and pulled the liquid into his mouth, I almost felt bad for him.

When he was finished, he looked back over and our eyes met.

“You had a thing for me?”

“Y…yes,” he mumbled looking away.

“So why would you spread that rumor?”

“Henry…if you and him had started dating….I couldn’t let it happen.”

“So, you made up a rumor making me sound like the biggest hoe in East Cannan High? Kelton you are seriously the worst.”

“I hate that I caused that type of distress…I was a piece of shit.”

A huff escaped my lips. “What’s changed?”

He sighed. “Fatherhood.”

Oof!

I’d almost forgotten that he was about to be a parent. My heart tugged a little.

“There’s nothing I can do to make up for the past, Sassy. But I would love to try. Dinner good and proper….southern gentleman best behavior shit.”

My eyebrow quirked. “I want to say no…like I’m shaking from the fact that I want to punch you in your eye and never speak to you again.”

“And I wouldn’t blame you if you did,” Kelton was gripping the steering wheel again.

Get out of the car, Silver.
