You let him in, I thought.
For just a second, Kelton had gotten inside of my mind and my body.
Never again, though.
I was going to steer clear of him if it killed me.
Instead, I focused on Dani and we began to figure out our new fall segments, while I drank away the lunch hour. My silence would be my revenge against my asshole bully from high school through college.
Periodt!
Chapter4
Kelton
My trade from one Premier Football League team to another had been done quietly. It had been a small blip on the radar as I’d signed a brand new contract worth millions thanks to my agent Turner Saint.
Now I was suited up for the Sacramento Knights, wearing the silver and black uniform with pride. My fingers slowly thumped against the wooden locker room bench as the coach went over strategies for our first game of the season. I was listening but only halfway and knew I should have been because we were playing last year’s division champs, The Los Angeles Lions.
Of course, everything had been going well and was truly quiet, just the way I liked it until an internet blog had gotten ahold of images of me and my ex strolling through the airport. Now I was on the front page of every tabloid from here to Kentucky.
“Kline, you ready!” Coach Andrews voice cut through my thoughts.
“Yes sir!” I said.
“Let’s get out there and kick some Lion ass, huddle up!”
Grabbing my black helmet, I came into the huddle with the rest of my new teammates, some who were probably pissed about me getting so much money from the trade. One of the assistant coaches started the Lord’s Prayer and we all bowed our heads in unison.
When the prayer was finished, Hector Vargas, captain and quarterback broke the huddle, “Lets light these candy ass Lions up like its Christmas. On three, let’s go!”
After walking out onto the field, I didn’t remember anything else except watching for Hector to get the ball. My breathing was all over the place and the roar of the crowd rumbled through my body the minute I caught it and made my way down the field. The Lions had some of the best players in the PFL but I maneuvered around them, making my way down the field to my first touchdown as a Knight.
The energy from the stadium was like an electricity I had never felt before and it carried me the entire game. When the game was over and done the Knights had defeated the Lions, 29-16.
Victory was sweet and the boys were ready to turn up and party. Making my way off the field, I saw her then.
Silver.
She was dressed in an all-black outfit with a dark green blazer. A smile was plastered over her face as she did a post-game interview with Hector. The way the stadium lights shined in her eyes had me stopped in my tracks.
There was something different about her too.Her hair was curly. Tight dark ringlets were framing her face that had just a hint of makeup on it.
Snapping from it, I figured if I showered quick enough and got dressed, I might be able to catch her before she left.
The locker room was crowded, and everyone was in a good mood but I rushed to the shower quickly stripping the uniform from my body and tossing it in the waiting laundry basket. Scrubbing sweat from my body quickly, I was out of the shower in five minutes and hurriedly got dressed.
“Aye Kels, you coming toNoirtonight?” I was nearly out the door when Richie, another linebacker called out to me.
“Yeah bro, text me, I’m coming though,” I nodded and headed out.
Navigating to parking lot, I saw Silver and her new team packing up. She looked up and saw me but pretended not to.
“Silver!” I called out.
She kept right on with her task until I was next to her.
“Silver, hey!”
