She was pointing at the door and had stopped looking at me. Her nails were a little shorter than usual but they were painted in a light powder blue. The entire time I’d known her she’d went for bolder colors, bright pinks, red and greens.
Powder blue was new.
A boy, I thought again.
I smirked and sat down in the chair near her. There was no where else in the world I wanted to be. I needed, like I had for months, to be near her.
“What are you doing?”
“I’m staying a while. Enzo’s gone home I suppose because you probably bullied him and Treyanna. Well, you can’t bully, wife.”
She sat back and rolled her eyes. “Well don’t talk to me.”
“Why don’t you have guards on you?”
“To go to an OBGYN appointment? I had no fucking clue that my car was going to be blown up. I supposed we both know who this was.”
“The Giancomos,” I nodded. “This is bold of them.”
“Bold isn’t the word. Who comes after a pregnant woman?”
“Alistair…he killed Talia before I had the chance,” I stated.
“Well….he has fucked with the wrong one. I’m going to put a bullet in him.”
The door to the room opened and a nurse came in. She was a tiny blond slip of thing. My presence scared her and her mouth opened to form a perfect, “O.” But she recovered quickly.
“Mrs. Scarpetta,” she looked over at Diamond. “You seem to be completely fine. We’re doing some blood work. I’m gonna have a listen to the baby’s heartbeat now.”
“What?” I stood up and came to Diamond’s side.
“Sir, I’m sorry who are you?” She still looked alarmed but I didn’t give a damn.
“Sperm donor,” Diamond rolled her eyes. “Now that that mystery is solved. Lets see what he’s doing.”
Stepping back and moving out of the nurses way, I watched as she pulled out the ultrasound machine. Lights were blinking up and down, all around and I had no clue what I was really looking at. Very gently, she eased Diamond’s yellow gown open and then dropped the gel onto her waiting skin. The gel seemed to give off an iridescent glow against the smooth brown coloring of my her skin. With slow, steady movements, she moved the wand over and around until finally the latest Scarpetta came onto the screen. His heartbeat filled the room and my waiting ears. My heart twisted like a cloth being wrung out.
I had never heard a song more beautiful than that of my son’s heart. It was powerful and it was strong. My son’s heartbeat cried out to something in my blood asking for revenge.
Alistair needed to be dealt with.
When the nurse was done, she put everything away and quietly left. I settled into a chair and watched as Diamond let her head fall back. The little bit of makeup that she had chosen to wear today had chosen to slide. The mascara had run from more than likely tears. Part of me wanted to go over and wipe at her eyes. Maybe even kiss her.
Deciding that those actions would cause World War 3, I laid back in the chair and watched her rest. She seemed at ease with my presence. Her breathing turned to soft snores, her hand resting on her bump.
I was going to be a father, I thought.
Holy fucking shit, this is really happening, I thought again.
The world was going to have another Scarpetta to deal with. A grin spread across my face.
He would have his mother’s fire and my unwavering attention.
A prince…
