"Diamond, what was that?"
Her face had scrunched. "No."
"No what?"
"Fuck my life. I was supposed to be murdering you."
Neither one of us had dared to look down. I knew what I would find when I did. Instinctively I knew that I would find my feet, and Diamond's perfectly painted toes, cover in fluid because her water had broken.
"He's coming, isn't he?"
"I have to call, Naomi," she ignored me and went in search of her cellphone.
The ringing of the phone could be heard, and Naomi picked up. They chatted animatedly for a few moments and then it was quiet again. The room had felt as though it was spinning, and I had still refused to look at the floor.
It seemed hotter in the room than usual.
"Naomi is going to meet me at the hospital," Diamond said.
"He's coming?" I repeated the question.
"Yes," she was biting her lip.
Holy shit, I thought.
My brain was becoming scrambled but felt like mush at the same time. This was real. I was going to become a father. This was why I had survived the fire. To get back to Diamond and have a life with her, mob shit aside.
"Okay," I stood running my hands through my hair. "I'm ready to meet my son. I've waited long enough."
A frown was deeply planted onto her features. For a few moments I watches as she shoved herself back into the clothes, I'd had her shed. "You're not staying."
I came in closer, she groaned as my fingers danced along her cheek. "Nothing will keep me from you or him, Diamond. I've told you that, Tesoro. Now let's get you to the hospital."
My heart was ready to come out of my chest the entire drive to the hospital. Her phone began to vibrate and blow up and I saw that Enzo was calling. We locked eyes as she answered.
"No," I heard her say. "I'm fine...I'm with..."
Enzo must have said something else but didn't press it.
"I'm going to the hospital," she said again. "No, don't come. Naomi is going to be there. We've been over the birth plan, Enzo."
My hands had started to sweat, the steering wheel becoming slippery in my grasp. Nearly running a red light, I slowed my speed down. Diamond finally ended the phone call.
"Well, he's pissed," she threw at me.
"And?"
"And he still thinks you’re dead but if you're planning on being present, Naomi is going to quickly realize how undead you really are. Luckily, I paid for a private room at the hospital, but Enzo is still sending Morgan over."
"Morgan?"
"My bodyguard who I gave the slip," she rolled her eyes at me.
I was already formulating a plan. It might have just been time to let the cat out of the bag and tell my brother that I was alive. Glancing over at Diamond, I noticed she had started to look even more uncomfortable than she had before we left the motel.
Baby Scarpetta was for sure on the way.
