“Aah, yes,” I said and then remembered why she was here. “Please, come in.”

She entered and removed her coat. I took it from her and hung it up. Quietly she and the doctor discussed Gabriel and then he departed. She found a blanket on the back of the couch and gently covered Gabriel and then proceeded to sit down.

“I had no idea that you…”

“Freelance,” she offered.

“Oh,” I replied.

She took a seat on the recliner and I began to feel useless. Glancing at Gabriel, I noticed the purple tint from earlier had faded.

“He wasn’t always this way,” I told her.

“From our interactions at the hospital… he seems very sad,” she offered.

It was true. There had been some sort of sadness inside of my brother for a very long time and I wasn’t sure when it had happened. I couldn’t put my finger on the exact moment when Gabriel had turned to drugs and when our relationship had suffered for it.

I began to pull on my coat and then stopped to offer Carson my phone number. “Please let me know if anything changes.”

She pulled out a laptop, looked up, and gave a nod, and then I was gone. Checking the watch on my wrist …I realized the day was barely getting started. I needed to check back in with Liam and Valentin.
