Oliver grimaced.“I don’t know.I’d lost a lot of blood by then and it was difficult to focus.I couldn’t hear what they were saying.”
“What was the officer’s name?”
“Martin.”
Glacial silence, then, “Where is he now?”
“He’s dead too.”
“Where is Andrew’s body?”
Sam pointed to the ground. They must be able to hear what Lucas was saying.
“Here at the hospital.I imagine they’ll need to do an autopsy or something.Someone might need to do a formal identification. Are you able to come up?”
A long pause.“I don’t know. When are you going back to the dive site?”Lucas asked.
Oliver’s eyes widened. He would have thought the expedition was the least of Lucas’s concerns.“I haven’t spoken to a doctor yet about when I’ll be released.”The curtain swung open and Rodney strode in.Oliver swallowed his groan. He’d forgotten about the man.
“I’ll call you later.”Lucas hung up.
Damn. He’d hoped to get more information from Lucas.
Rodney glared at the two ex-military men.“What are you doing here?”
“Checking on a friend,” Sam answered.
“I need to ask him questions.Get out.”
Sam glanced at Oliver for confirmation, and he nodded.“Can you tell my team I’ll call them when I’m done here?”
“Copy.”
Rodney waited until they left the cubicle and then demanded, “Tell me what happened.”
It was going to be a long afternoon.
With a sigh, Oliver started his story.
It was what felt like hours later when a doctor walked in, his posture straight, temples greying, and interrupted the interrogation.“Excuse me, Detective.I need to speak with my patient.”
“We’re not done here,” Rodney barked.
Oliver’s head thumped and his throat hurt from talking.“Could I get some pain meds?”he rasped.
The doctor nodded.“You’ll need to come back tomorrow,” he said to Rodney.“My patient needs rest. He’s exhausted.”
Oliver wanted to kiss the man.
Rodney opened his mouth to argue, and the doctor said, “Please leave.”The tone brooked no argument and reminded Oliver of Sam and Sherlock.Military.
Rodney glowered.“I’ll be back in the morning.”
When he was gone, Oliver smiled at the older man.“Thank you.”
“You’re welcome.”He wrote something on his file.
“How long am I going to be here?”Dot hadn’t come in with Rodney, which had to mean she wasn’t allowed to, or was busy elsewhere. She wouldn’t choose to let him deal with Rodney without a buffer.
