His bottom lip trembled. “Am I in danger too?”
“We won’t take any chances.”
Jordan glanced towards the windows. “You should move in,” he stated. “You’ll have to stay with me after school, and we’ll be safer with you here.”
The idea had merit and appeal. “Let’s wait to find out what Dot has to say.” He gestured to the TV. “Where are they looking for a shipwreck?”
“At the Abrolhos Islands,” Jordan said. “Where’s that?”
“It’s off the coast around Geraldton,” Arthur told him.
They watched the rest of the show and as it was finishing, Gretchen joined them. Jordan turned off the television. “What did Dot say?”
Gretchen sighed. “There’s not a lot she can do. She’ll get her officers to keep an eye out for Kurt, and search for where he’s staying. If she can find him, she can question him.”
There weren’t as many tourists in town any more with the season almost ended. Someone should have seen him unless someone was helping him. Sam had mentioned they’d thought Stonefish was an international entity, because they’d had contacts in Perth and overseas, but last month they’d caught someone local who was high on the pecking order. Maybe he wasn’t the only one.
“Arthur’s going to walk me home from school,” Jordan said. “But he should move in so he can protect you.”
Gretchen gaped at him. “I’ll be fine.”
Jordan shook his head. “You said Dad knows bad people. They might try to hurt you, but not if Arthur’s here. He knows army stuff to protect us.” He turned to Arthur. “Do you have a gun?”
He did, but it was back in his apartment in the city. “Not here.”
“Does Sam?”
“I don’t think so.”
“Guns aren’t the solution,” Gretchen said.
“I’m happy to stay here, if you want me to,” Arthur said.
“We don’t have a spare bed.”
“I can sleep on the couch, or the floor. I’m used to sleeping rough.” And he very much wanted to protect this family.
Gretchen hesitated. “I don’t want to take advantage of you.”
He didn’t mind in the slightest. In fact he kind of wished she would. “The other option would be to come and stay at Sam’s. He’s got a spare bedroom.”
Gretchen glanced at Jordan. “Here would be better. Jordan has all his things and Kurt will know something is up if we move.”
Arthur smiled. “I’ll call Sam and tell him not to expect me home tonight.”
Gretchen bit her lip. “Are you certain you don’t mind?”
“Not at all.” He would make sure no harm came to them.
Jordan cheered. “You can stay in my room. Cody sleeps on a mattress on the floor when he stays over.”
His enthusiasm was sweet. “Probably best I stay out here. That way I can monitor both doors.”
“Right. Of course.” Jordan nodded as if he knew it all along.
There was something else they need to consider. “We should talk about what Jordan should say if his dad approaches him again,” Arthur said.
“I won’t speak to him.”
