“Do you want to talk about it?”
“No.”
“Have you spoken to Ceiveon about it?”
She sighed. “Yes.”
Good. “Well, if you ever need another sounding board, I’m available.”
“Thank you, Sam.”
He liked his name on her lips. The quiet murmur, the heartfelt words. “So are we on for dinner tomorrow night?”
A slight chuckle. “All right, but I reserve the right to cancel.”
“All right.” He’d make sure she wouldn’t want to.
Chapter 9
Before Sam left to go diving the next morning, he called Sherlock. When Sherlock didn’t answer, he called Kylie.
“He goes home today,” Kylie said. “You won’t have anyone who can ask him to answer.”
Yeah, that was one of his concerns. “He’ll have some home visits for a while, won’t he?”
“As long as he doesn’t decline them.”
Maybe he could tell Ed about Sherlock. Ed wouldn’t have an issue checking on him while the team was away. The only problem would be getting Ed to promise not to tell Amy and Brandon about it. “I’ll sort something out.”
“You’re a good friend, Sam,” Kylie responded. “Try him again and I’ll send a nurse to his room.”
Sam rang his friend and this time Sherlock answered. “What do you want now?” Again with the angry growl, but at least he was talking.
Sam went with mock innocence. “Hey, I can call you just to chat. What makes you think I want something?”
A pause. “So you don’t want something?”
Sam laughed. “OK, you’ve got me. I need you to investigate someone for me.”
“I’m not a private investigator.”
So literal. “No, but you know people, and can find out anything.”
Sherlock snorted. “Who am I investigating?”
“Her name’s Penelope Fraser.” Sam ignored the twinge of guilt. He was fairly sure she wouldn’t be involved with Stonefish, but they’d been fooled before.
“Where does she work?”
“Parks and Wildlife Services.”
“You want me to investigate the woman who suspended your licence?” Sherlock sounded incredulous.
“Not for that reason,” he said. “I need to make sure Stonefish Enterprises hasn’t got to her.”
“Didn’t the two main guys get killed?”
“We don’t know who the head guys are,” Sam said. “Stonefish have a habit of blackmailing people into doing their bidding. Penelope blames herself for something that happened in her past.”
