Of course not.

“I ran into Lee on Monday when I was working.”

“Where?” Matt demanded. “Why didn’t you call the police?”

“Because he would have been long gone,” Georgie answered.

“Did he threaten you?”

“No, he tried to hide, but I called him out.” Matt growled and she held up a hand to speak. “He warned me to stay away from the animal smuggling. Asked me to pretend I didn’t see the tracks and to tell Matt to stop investigating.”

“So that’s how you knew,” Matt said.

She nodded. “He knew we’d notified authorities about the shipwreck and said he was trying to move interest away from us, but we kept poking our noses into Stonefish business.”

“He could have killed you, Georgie,” Brandon said.

“I got the feeling he’s trying to protect us. He said we’d been good to him. I thanked him for saving Tess and for sending the wedding photos.”

Brandon swore under his breath. “You need to tell Dot about this.”

She didn’t want to. If they had someone working for Stonefish on their side that had to be a good thing.

“He’s right,” Matt said. “They need to know he’s still in the area. Lee might not feel so protective of the police.”

She couldn’t argue with that. “I’ll tell them when they drop around.”

“You want to tell me what you were investigating?” Darcy asked Matt.

Georgie smiled. Now it was Matt’s turn to get into trouble.

“I followed the tracks towards the ranges and found some animal traps. I reported them to the police.”

“You both should know better. No one is to go off alone.”

“My job is working alone,” Georgie pointed out.

“Maybe Matt can go with you,” Brandon answered.

She almost laughed. What was it with the men in her life? She’d had this argument already. “Declan’s going to think I can’t handle myself.”

“Declan will do what the police ask him to do,” Brandon said.

“Can you spare Matt from the station?”

“We can if it keeps you safe.”

“And how would having Matt by my side keep me safe?” She squeezed his hand. “Neither of us have guns. It just means both of us would be killed.”

“It’s an extra set of eyes.”

“I’m all for it,” Matt said. “Think about it. We can spend our days together, hanging out, just the two of us.”

He painted a nice picture, and in any other circumstance she’d jump at the chance, but she wasn’t putting him in harm’s way. “Let’s talk to Dot about it.”

She patted his knee and they drove in silence the rest of the way home.

As they pulled up outside the house, Lara burst out and raced across to the car. As soon as Georgie and Matt were out she flung her arms around them. “I was so scared! Are you all right? What happened?”
