With Georgie in his life he should think about his future. He wanted her part of it, but it would be a challenge. One or both of them would have to travel to work in order for them to live together. And could he offer her the type of life she deserved?
He shook his head. He was thinking too much. It had been easy to be with her.
Matt turned on the shower and stepped under the spray. He had to tell Darcy about their relationship by the weekend when Georgie would be out here. Darcy would be shocked. This would all seem like it was happening so fast and he might think Matt was taking advantage of Georgie’s feelings for him.
Though Darcy didn’t often play the protective brother, Matt had seen it a time or two when someone in town hadn’t taken no as no.
Would Matt’s relationship with Georgie ruin his friendship with Darcy?
With a sigh he twisted off the taps and dried himself, dressing in shorts and T-shirt. His phone beeped on the way back to his room.
How was your day? xx
Georgie. He grinned, his concerns pushed away for the moment.
Better now. What did you get up to?
He hung his towel over the hook in his room and waited for her reply.
Captured two animal smugglers.
His heart stopped and he swore. She had to be kidding. His fingers dialled her number before he could even finish the thought.
“I’m fine,” Georgie said as she answered.
“Are you serious?”
“Yeah, I came across them this morning. They didn’t give me any trouble.”
He sat on the bed, his heart racing. “Tell me everything.”
“It wasn’t a big deal.” She spoke quickly as if wanting to reassure him. “Spotted a car somewhere it shouldn’t be, and when I confronted them, they didn’t resist. The…” Her voice trailed off.
She was leaving something out. “What Georgie?”
“I think someone was watching from the ranges, but I moved everyone behind the cars when I saw the glint.”
Shit. “Did the police check it out?”
“I told Dot about it.”
Maybe he should head that way tomorrow and see if he could find any evidence someone had been there. Or he’d call Nhiari and find out what the police were doing. “I don’t like this.”
“Neither do I, but I didn’t go looking for them. I thought they were tourists in the wrong place.”
He bit his tongue. Now wasn’t the time to suggest she’d made a mistake about her new career path. It wasn’t her fault these people were there. She had a right to do her job safely.
But maybe he could convince her and Darcy to let him ride along for a few days until they caught the guy in the ranges. Darcy wouldn’t have a problem with Matt protecting Georgie, and if he could phrase it to Georgie as wanting to spend more time with her, she might go for it.
“How about I accompany you tomorrow?” he suggested.
Silence.
He winced, waiting for her response.
“Don’t you think I can handle myself?” The hurt in her voice was unexpected.
“No.” He swore. “I know you can, but I’d feel better knowing you weren’t alone.”
