His words brought her attention back to him. “What are you going to do?”
“I’ll make sure you can’t testify, and then I’m getting the hell out of Australia.”
She blinked. “Why kill me if you’re leaving?”
“Because my boss doesn’t like loose ends.”
His boss. So he wasn’t in charge. “I’ve already told the police everything. They have my statement on record, plus Salvatore talked as well. It’s enough for a court case.” She hoped. She had no idea how the legal system worked in Australia.
“Salvatore will be dealt with.” He scowled. “When did you get so confident? What happened to the mouse who was working for me?”
She squared her shoulders. “You don’t know me.”
Tan moved closer and Tess fought the urge to back up. What would he do to her? She couldn’t see a gun or any other weapon.
“It’s interesting you should end up here when for the past few months I’ve been trying to buy this property.”
Tess shifted. “If I’d known, I wouldn’t have come. The couple I hitched a ride with were coming here on holiday.”
“Couple? Salvatore said you were with a guy.”
“His wife hid in the back with me.”
Tan was getting closer, so she moved away from the car, back towards the track. “Is this a property?” she asked. “Looks like bush to me. Why would you want it?”
“None of your business.”
If she kept him talking, maybe the police would arrive in time. She should have waited. “So, are you planning to take the dinghy to Singapore?”
He scowled. “No. If I go to Singapore, I’m as good as dead.”
She jolted. Interesting. “Why?”
“Because I screwed up. You did this to me.” He reached inside his jacket, drew out a gun and pointed it at her.
Shit. Her heart raced, and she couldn’t drag her gaze from the end of the gun, waiting for the shot.
“I might have worked out a solution if you hadn’t seen me kill Charmaine.”
Her hands trembled as she raised them.
“You need to pay.”
Chapter 22
Tess backed away from the car, moving closer to Ed, but still too far away. With Lee next to him, he didn’t dare make himself known. “You got any backup here?”
“It’s just me I think, but Stonefish don’t tell me everything.”
That was in line with everything else they’d learnt about the consortium. Their pawns only knew what they needed to. Beyond the car, something moved. No, someone. Brandon. The cavalry had arrived, but would Lee shoot them? Ed scoured the area behind him and saw Sam sneaking around the opposite side, closing in, but it didn’t appear as if Sam had seen him. Which meant Dobby and Heath would be nearby as well.
“Ed, when this is over, make sure the police check the island.”
Ed frowned at Lee. “Why?” Had he seen the others?
“Just do it. I can’t say more.”
It was weird lying next to a man he’d drunk a beer with, and who had pointed a gun at him. Who had been potentially spying on his family for months now, and maybe even sabotaging the place. Yet part of him wanted to trust Lee. “Did you kill our sheep?”
