Now what? The toilet block was close to the edge of the property but not close enough that they wouldn’t be seen dragging a resisting man into the bushes. And he wasn’t letting the man get away. With a sigh he called Dot, shifting away from the site, while Sam knelt by the driver’s side rear tyre and used his key to deflate it. Good idea.

“You better have a good reason for calling me this early.”

“Site twenty-five at Retribution Bay Caravan Park,” he said. “Ed’s laptop is sitting on the back seat of the four-wheel drive.” He read out the number plate and then glanced towards the ablution block. The guy was exiting the building as a scowling Amy strode towards him from the chalet. Shit. “Target,” he hissed, and Sam moved, heading away from the site. Brandon hung up. “Morning, honey.” He grabbed Amy, and pushed her up against the nearby tree. “Play along,” he ordered and covered her lips with his.

He caught her gasp in his mouth and she stiffened for a second before she melted in his arms. This was possibly the worst idea he’d ever had… and the best. Her lips were warm and soft, and tasted like honey. His surroundings faded away and all his focus was on her lips and the way her body pressed against his. Her small moan sent arousal straight to his groin and he struggled to keep his sanity. If the intruder had been spying on the Ridge, he might recognise either of them. They needed to move. But damn, he didn’t want to.

He broke the kiss and moved Amy to his side, his arm around her waist. “Keep your head down.” He shuffled them in the opposite direction from the man and ducked behind one of the caravan awnings. After a second he peered around the corner. The man was climbing back into his tent. He sighed. They hadn’t been spotted.

When Brandon turned back to Amy, she was staring at him, her fingers brushing her lips.

The temptation to take her into his arms again was strong so he stepped further away. “I didn’t want him to recognise us.”

Disappointment flashed over her face. “Of course.”

Hell. He tugged her closer. “But I want to kiss you again.”

She leaned forward and her lips met his. The jolt of surprise was quickly followed by joy as he wrapped his arms around her waist and brought her body close to his. His tongue teased her lips and she opened for him, moaning a little as she did so. All of his worries faded away with the taste of her.

“If you two are finished, we should make ourselves scarce.” Sam’s amused tone was like a cold shower. “You’re drawing attention.”

Damn it. Brandon moved away and ignored Sam’s huge grin. Amy’s face was flushed and he slipped his hand into hers, needing to still touch her.

“We going to talk to him?” Sam asked.

He didn’t want Amy anywhere near the danger. “I called Dot.” And he’d hung up on her. Damn. He called the sergeant back.

“I’m on my way,” she said. “If you’re there when I arrive, I might arrest you on the spot.”

“Gotcha.” He hung up. “Dot’s coming now.” He moved so he could see the four-wheel drive. The guy was lowering the roof on his bed, packing up. Shit. Would he leave before Dot could arrive?

He glanced towards the entrance of the park. It was only a couple of minutes’ drive from the police station, but Dot might have to wait for Colin.

Would the man notice the flat tyre?

One of them would have to risk recognition and point it out to him if he didn’t. The man tested the latch and wandered around the car, checking everything was in place. He glanced at the tyres and swore.

Brandon let out a breath of relief as the man threw open the back and got a tyre pump out.

Where was Dot?

A car engine hummed, coming closer. Brandon spotted the white police car crawling towards them. “This way.” He took Amy’s hand and moved into position in case the guy ran. Sam followed.

The guy hadn’t noticed the police car.

Dot and Colin got out. Dot scanned the area and frowned as she spotted Brandon, but walked over to the man. Brandon couldn’t hear what she said, but the man flinched, moved to run and Colin stopped him, pressing him up against the car.

Satisfied, Brandon said, “Time to go home.” He shared a smile with Amy and kept his hand in hers as they headed back to the car.

Chapter 13

Had that just happened? Amy’s brain held the fog of too little sleep combined with unexpected lust and struggled to catch up with what was going on. Brandon had kissed her and it had been supernova hot. Then she’d kissed him like some kind of starved fool, and now they were walking hand in hand back to the car. Like they were a couple. She was too tired to make sense of anything. Brandon was a hell of a kisser.

When she’d left the Ridge, she hadn’t realised they would be out all night. Darcy would already be awake and probably out on the station and no one would know where she was. Lara.

She gasped and dropped Brandon’s hand, scrambling to get her phone out of her pocket. “I’ve got to call Darcy. I’m supposed to be home for Lara.”

“Georgie will be there.”
