“Wouldn’t it be nice for you two to ask questions to get to know her, instead of looking for reasons to judge her? Honestly, I would have disappeared on y’all, too.”
“Y’all? You speak Texan now?” my dad asks.
I lean on the island. I’m sex deprived and too tired for this.
“Look. If you two came to pick apart my girlfriend and run her off, you may as well head back home.”
“Whoa, whoa. We just wanted to meet who has you so occupied. We were just pointing out that first impression can go a long way,” My dad points out.
“Yeah, like your first impression when you froze over the phone like she wasn’t worth a simple ‘hello.’”
My mom shakes her head, full of denial. “No. We were just shocked.”
Now, I’m standing with my hands on my hips. “By what, exactly?”
“Axel?” Heaven calls out before my parents can answer.
“Yes, love?” Heaven finds me in the kitchen after following my voice.
She’s holding a couple of prints. Her eyes dart in the direction of my parents. “Hello, again,” she greets them then moves her attention back to me. “Which logo design speaks to you?”
I pull her to me until her back is resting on my chest and my chin is on the top of her head.
“Shouldn’t it speak to you?”
She chews her bottom lip as she studies them. “I like both.”
“Do you love them?”
“No. There are elements of both. I love the color scheme of this one but like the font better on this one…”
“Merge,” we say at the same time. Heaven tilts back her head to smile at me while she giggles.
“Thank you.” She’s so damn beautiful I peck her lips in response.
I watch her walk away, but one detail has me stopping her.
“Heaven?” Her short shorts-wearing ass stops then turn to look at me. “What about the other project? You said it had a five-day completion but it’s eight days later with no progress report.”
Her look is blank until she catches on. “I was right—five-day completion. I was going to check in today, but it appears that might change to Monday, hopefully.”
Like hell.
“If your original quote was correct, then what happened the last two days?”
“Prep for presentation. Always expect a seven day turn around with such projects.”
“There has to be a way to cut down response time.”
Heaven laughs. “Let me know when you figure it out. Luckily, these projects only happen quarterly.”
"Noted. I still want to see what's done now."
"How about we make an appointment? Your parents are here to see you, and I have the logo to finish—"
"Now, Heaven."
"Alright. If you come to my office I'll show you the mockup, but we don't have time for a full presentation."
