Chapter Ten
Rowan
Helping Clara out of the car I smirk at her and kiss her quickly. My hand lands on her lower back as I lead her up the front door to The Wilson’s rancher. We had just enough time for me to make her come twice in the shower, actually shower, and get dressed, before having to leave to go pick up Rhett. I subtly nod my head at Kieran so he knows he can leave as Clara raises her hand to knock on the door, but a man opens it before she has the chance. He’s about my height and stature. I’d definitely be able to take him. Especially because right now he stands between Clara and I, and our Little Bear. He looks me up and down, “Who’s your friend Clara?”
I fight not to roll my eyes. This is Cooper Wilson, he’s a firefighter in the city. I know because I do research onwho’s going to be around Bear. Clara has enough of our stare down or at least that’s what I’m guessing because she says, “Rowan, this is Cooper. Cooper, Rowan. Now if you could stop whatever alpha man bullshit you’re doing I’d like to get my son.” Cooper moves aside to let us in mumbling a ‘sorry’. Rhett’s half asleep on the couch covered up with his favorite blue blanket and snuggling Safe close. This weird feeling overtakes my chest. Like a tightening and tingling, maybe it’s indigestion.
Clara kneels beside him,“Hey baby, Rowan and I are here to get you. Ready to come home and go to bed?”His eyes dart to me and a huge smile takes over his face.
“Can Rowan come?”
Before she can answer I do,“Of course I will, do you want to come have lunch at my house tomorrow?”He nods and she shoots a glare my way because this is the first she’s hearing of these plans.
The smirk that I know makes her face heat and her panties dampen, breaks out on my face, “We’ll talk about it when we get him down.”
She shakes her head, but she isn’t fooling anyone. The grin playing at the edges of her lips tells me she isn’t actually mad or upset.
“Come on baby, let’s go.”
After telling everyone goodnight, thank you, and bye. We make our way back to my SUV. I watch intently as she straps him into his seat . She’s irritated when she turns around, “Would you like to check behind me? I know how to buckle my kid, Rowan.” Whoa, what? I put my hands up in surrender.
“Hey, no. I was watching to make sure I know how to do it so I can help buckle him in when we go places.I just want to be able to help.”
Her eyes soften, “I’m sorry, I’m not use to anyone wanting to help.” Pulling her into my arms I press my lips to the top of her head.
“It’s okay, but get used to it. I’m here now, you’ll never have to do it alone again.” She smiles up at me and presses a kiss to the underside of my jaw.
“Come on, let’s get him home. I’m exhausted.”

I’m shocked out of my deep sleep when I hear a scream coming from Rhett’s room. Clara put Rhett down when we got back to her place. She reluctantly agreed to come to my house tomorrow. After I made her come on my tongue and fingers, we fell asleep. Jumping up before I have a chance of even processing what’s happening. I grab my gun from the nightstand, and run into Rhett’s room. Hearing Clara chasing after me makes me want to stop to tell her to go back, but there’s no chance I’m taking another second to get to him. As I’m pushing open Rhett’s door with my foot I’m already scanning the room to search for anything out of place. I don’t see anyone, but that doesn’t mean anything. It takes me a few seconds to realize that he’s still asleep in his bed. He’s having some sort of night terror.
A huge gust of air swooshes out from deep in my lungs, and most of the tension in my body dissipates. Most but not all because little man is still thrashing and whimpering, I don’t think, I just act. Setting the gun down on Rhett’s bedside table I lay down next to him with me between him and the gun so he won’t see or touch it. I pull him into my side and stroke hishair slowly, like my Da use to do when I was scared as a little boy. He starts to settle right away. Looking up to Clara, she has tears in her eyes. I’m not sure what else to do so I decide to flash her a gentle smile at the same time I’m trying to settle us in this way too small bed. “I’ve got him if you want to go back to bed, baby.”
She shakes her head and Rhett picks that moment to pop open his eyes and they wheel around to her,“Mommy, come, stay, Rowan and Mommy stay.”She lays down on the other side of Rhett but I get up. No way can we all fit in that twin bed, besides my job is much more important tonight. That’s to make them feel protected.
Before Rhett can freak out I tell him,“I’m going to sit and keep watch, okay Little Bear? You and Mommy sleep. I’ll make sure everything’s okay.”
Rhett nods,“Keep us safe?”I nod, what he doesn’t realize is that I would do anything, and stop anyone in my way to keep them safe, loved, and happy,
“Safe, I promise.”
Picking up my gun before settling against the wall beside his closed bedroom door, I lay my gun down on my left side, and stretch out one leg with the other one pulled up to rest my forearm on. I give them one last smile and sign as I speak so they know I’m talking to both of them.
“Sleep, I’m here now. You’re always safe and protected with me.” Rhett and Clara both smile and snuggle in together, It doesn’t take long for them to drift off to sleep while I stay alert to keep the bad people and bad thoughts away.
