“Well, I’m not good at listening to directions. And you might have made some highlight reels.”
He just scoffed in response.
“Are you suspended?”
“Probably.”
I hadn’t heard him this miserable in a long time. “It’s going to be okay, Colt.”
“It won’t,” he rumbled out. “He’s still walking this planet.”
We fell quiet for a beat, two, three. The confusion I felt from watching his fight intensified, a twist in my gut. “What do you want to do right now?”
His voice came through as feeble, brittle. “I have to wait through the end of the game. Probably explain it to the team as best as I can without giving anything away. I don’t want to draw attention to you. I hate that it might.”
“I’ll be okay,” I assured him. “Worry about you.”
He snorted a morose laugh. “Impossible.”
I squeezed my eyes shut. I hated all of this: hearing him so miserable, knowing he was feeling confused and worried at all. “What do you need from me after the game?”
A choppy breath came through the phone. It killed me to hear Colton this upset.
“It’s gonna be okay, Colt. Promise. You want me to come over?”
He sniffed a few times. “Yes, please.”
“I’ll be there. Just let me know when you head home.”
