I shrug and hold out my arm. “Have at it.”
“That’s not the usual reaction I get from patients,” she says, arching a brow.
“What can I say?” I spread my arms wide. “I’m a Hufflepuff. We’re all about dedication, loyalty, and patience. Best house of the four, if you ask me.”
She laughs and shakes her head. “Why are you telling me all of this?”
“Because we’re getting to know one another. Obviously.”
“Obviously,” she says, drawing out the word.
The door swings open and the lead nurse looks in, eyes narrowing as they land on Harper. What is her deal? It’s like Jekyll and Hyde the way she interacts with Harper versus me. “Let’s go, Miss Payne. You’re needed on the floor.”
Harper stiffens, the light in her eyes dimming as she dips her chin obediently and says, “Of course.”
The lead nurse steps out and Harper gives me a little finger wave. “Duty calls.”
She turns on her heel and hurries after her supervisor. Maybe it’s my imagination, but I swear her hips have a little more sway than they had this morning. “Harper?”
“Yes?” she asks, turning when she reaches the door.
“You know what they say about Hufflepuffs, right?”
“No, what?”
“If you can’tbea Hufflepuff,” I say, flashing her a cocky grin, “dateone.”
She gives an exasperated eye roll, but the corners of her lips twitch. “The hospital has a no fraternization policy, remember?”
How could I forget? “Just give me a little more time. I’ll make a rule breaker out of you yet.”
“So not happening,” she calls over her shoulder as she slips into the hall.
Challenge accepted.
Chapter Four
Harper
Monday is proving no less hectic than Friday, but I’m determined to kick ass today. No second-guessing myself, no letting Nurse Rogers intimidate me, no obsessing over Chase Spellman.
Which would be much easier if Bri wasn’t blowing up my phone.
Normally I leave my cell at the nurse’s station, but since it was going bananas earlier and one of the LPN’s thought it might be an emergency, it’s now tucked in the pocket of my shirt, along with a notepad and three pens. On silent.
Unfortunately, I can’t unsee the last flurry of messages.
Bri: How’s the star patient today?
Bri: You should go for it. The guy is legit hot. I’d lick him like
Bri: Also, he scaled a frat house for you, so there’s that…
Bri: I’ll bet he has a big
Bri: Are you ignoring me or are you getting busy with Prince Charming?
Clearly Bri and I need to have the boundaries talk again. Because she has none and obviously wants me to fail my clinicals.
