“No.” She cringed. “Please tell me that you saw nothing.”
“Um… I can tell you that, but it wouldn’t be true.”
“No,” she squeaked. Her cheeks flushed pink and she covered her face with her hands.
Chase laughed and moved toward her. Taking her in his arms, he pulled her next to him on the bed. She nuzzled her head into his chest.
“I’m never leaving this room.” Maggie sighed.
Chase gently lifted her chin. “You know, you’re not terrible. I could use some backup vocals, or maybe we could do a duet.”
Maggie wrinkled her forehead. “Absolutely not.”
“Personally, I liked how you made the song your own.” Chase sang, “Don’t know what it is bout thatbig guy’slovin… Nice creative liberty you took there, changing it from gal to guy.” Chase chuckled.
Maggie threw herself back on the bed. “Oh my gosh. Please tell me that those mind erasers from Men in Black are real. I could use one right now.”
Chase leaned back, propped up on an elbow facing her. “You’re fine. It was cute.”
“You’re gonna have to tell your mom that I can’t make dinner because I had to flee the state of Alabama.”
“Oh no, I can’t do that. Momma Norah would be livid. You’re coming to dinner missy. Come on.” Chase got up and held out his hand, pulling Maggie to her feet. “How bout you finish gettin ready and then I’ll beat you in a game of corn hole?”
“Corn what?”
“Corn hole? You know the game where you throw bean bags… into a hole?”
“Oh yeah, we just call that ‘bags’ in Minnesota.”
Chase laughed. “The way you say bags is hilarious.”
“The way you guys sayeverythingis amazing.” Maggie responded. “I’ll be down in a minute. And Iwillbeat you.” Maggie smirked as Chase closed the door behind him.
As he walked down the stairs, he laughed to himself. She needs to stop being so adorable...Then his heart guard spoke up.Remember what happened with Amber?Chase countered,But Maggie seems different. Maybe I should go for it and tell her how I feel…
Chapter 32
Maggie
“Ma,I’msofullI’m about to pop.” Cam patted his stomach. They had wheeled him into the dining room for dinner, but because his leg needed to be straight he couldn’t sit close to the table. Instead, he held his plate in his hands.
“Yes, thank you Mrs. Smith—Norah, it was all really good.” Maggie agreed.
“Well, make some more room because ya’ll still gotta eat pie,” Norah held up the dessert she had baked.
“I’m gonna need a minute, Ma,” Chase said, as he stood to put his plate in the sink.
“That’s fine, I have some of your baby pictures I wanted to show Maggie.” Norah set her rag down and headed into the living room.
“Mom, that’s really not necessary.”
“Oh, I think it is.” Maggie grinned.
“Delilah and Banjo, bath time. Say goodnight and let’s head upstairs,” Jade instructed.
Delilah came running over to Maggie and gave her a big squeeze. Then she held out her hand for Banjo to high five. Maggie wished she didn’t like these people so much. Breaking things off with Chase was going to be hard enough, but the thought of never seeing his family again threatened to rip her heart in two.
Norah walked back into the kitchen and held up a stack of photo albums. “Found em! I’ll set them on the coffee table for ya’ll. I’m gonna wash up.”
