He called his mom as he walked through the sliding glass doors. She rushed to meet him as the elevator doors opened on the second floor.

“Chase,” she wrapped her arms around him and kissed his cheek.

“How’s Cam?”

Threading her arm through his, she clung to him tightly as they slowly sauntered down the hallway. “He’s in stable condition. His left leg and ankle are broken. He just came out of surgery. They had to put pins in his leg. And he has a severe concussion.”

Chase looked down at his 5’ 3” mom. She was as beautiful to him as ever, but he noticed a few more lines on her face then he remembered. He would never tell her that, of course.

“So what happened?”

“Because of the concussion, the doctors don’t want him to talk much. But, from what we’ve gathered, he was checking out some storm damage to the roof. When he was coming down the ladder, he must have lost his footing. Or maybe the ladder tipped.”

“What was he thinking going up there alone? Why didn’t he at least have someone holding the ladder?” Chase wondered.

“You know him, he was probably in a hurry. Figured he could just take a quick look.”

“Well, I’m glad he’s gonna be okay.”

They stopped outside a room where Chase saw Cam’s name in small print on a board next to the door.

His mom stepped forward to hug Chase and laid her head on his chest. "He will be. It’s just gonna be a long recovery.”

Chase held her close.

“Ready to go see him?” Norah asked.

Chase nodded and she turned the door handle.
