“It means, warlord, that although we managed to stop the poison from killing you, certain areas of your brain had to be rebuilt by the ReGen pod. A few of your motor neurons were damaged and are still healing.”

I opened my mouth to bark another question, but Mersan lifted his hand to stop me. “You’re going to be fine. It will just take a few more hours in ReGen to heal the rest of the way.”

Thank the gods. This was a fucking nightmare. To survive years in the war to be taken down by a blob of jelly? Fucking humiliating.

“All of your long term memory is intact. Your battle training and history should all be in place.” He glared at me. “Rogue 5?”

Ah. A test.

“Latiri 4?”

“Deep cave Hive base. Tore it to pieces.”

Mersan nodded. “Battleship Zeus?”

“Female Hive hybrid battleship. First of her kind.”

“Excellent. As I suspected, it is only your recent, short-term memory that has been affected.” He was actually grinning now. “Once you can stand up without falling over—”

I growled a warning out of habit. My beast did not particularly like this Prillon. With good reason. He’d done a lot of…medical procedures on us when we were still active in the I.C..

“No offense intended, Warlord Velik. To you or your beast.”

I settled back, confused. I was irritated with the doctor, but where was my beast? Why wasn’t I arguing with him about whether or not to rip this arrogant Prillon’s head off his shoulders?

I searched within for the beast as the doctor rambled on. I would receive a formal briefing later, I had no doubt. And the doctor’s voice tended to be…annoying.

There he was. Almost…asleep? What are you doing?

My beast stared at me like I was an idiot.

At least that felt normal.

Do you need me to kill something for you? I did not sense danger.

No.

Then fuck off.

What the fuck was going on here? I studied my beast for a few moments. He appeared to be perfectly fine, if in a bad mood. Which was completely normal.

“Warlord, did you hear me? You will be transporting to I.C. Core command within the hour. You will finish your healing there and meet up with your team.” Doctor Mersan pressed an injector of some kind against my neck. The medication burned, but the sensation only lasted a few seconds, replaced with a surge of energy I sorely needed. My head cleared. The dizziness abated.

I turned my head to each side, stretching tendons and loosening stiff muscles as much as I could.

Oh yes. This routine I knew well. Helion needed me to do something for him. No doubt it would involve rending, tearing, hunting and killing our enemies. “Excellent. I am ready now.”

I was tired of this planet. These people. Being locked inside the grounds of the processing center because the humans were too afraid of us to allow us to walk among them.

The door to the medical bay slid open and Warden Egara walked in. I did not cover up, but she did not look me over.

Pity. She was an attractive female.

My beast grunted disagreement. As usual. Not interested.

“He is not to leave before we address the issue of the young woman in my office, Doctor. I believe I made that clear.”

“Perfectly.” The doctor turned away from the warden so only I could see his face. He looked…annoyed. “Nothing will come of it. She is lying.”
