When I didn’t say anything, just sat there with tears leaking from my eyes to run down my face, she indicated my leg. “May I? I need to take a look at that.”
“Fine.” It didn’t hurt anymore, not like it had before. I was pretty sure I was in shock or something, but I didn’t really care. Kovo was dead. There was nothing I could do about it. I loved him and he was gone. “Do you know how much it costs to hire an Elite Hunter to kill someone?”
The doctor, who had been gently lifting my legs up onto the examination table, stopped cold and looked at me from the corner of her eye. “No. I’m sorry. I do not have that information.”
“Figures. Thought I’d ask.”
The Atlan woman, female, had mating cuffs on. They were not as elaborate as my mother’s, but they were gorgeous. Sparkling silver over dark pewter. The tones were in three dimensional patterns that made it appear as if she wore flowing water on her wrists.
“Your mating cuffs are beautiful.”
“Thank you.” She worked at cutting my pants from the hem up so she could get to my leg. She wasn’t having much luck. “You are wearing battle armor.”
“I am?” Of course I was. Kovo would have made sure I was as protected as he could make me.
“Yes. Very high quality. Where did you get this? It is not standard issue, not the correct color.”
I looked at the clothes. They weren’t jeweled or inscribed with a family crest or motto. They were plain. Simple. Like love. Love was simple. You either did, or you didn’t. “My mate made it for me.”
“You were Kovo’s mate?”
“Yes.” I wanted to scream at her that I wasstillKovo’s mate, but she had referred to him in the past tense. As in dead. Guess I wasn’t his anymore. He was dead, which meant he definitely wasn’t mine.
She retrieved a different gadget and placed it over the armor covering my leg. A zipper-like portion appeared out of nowhere. The doctor unzipped it and rolled it up my leg. “Battle armor is made for quick and easy removal.”
I had clothes with magic zippers. I should be excited, or at least curious.
I was numb.
She scanned me with her tools and nodded her head as if pleased. “You fractured both bones in this leg, but the armor prevented it from being worse. I believe the ReGen wand will repair the damage. However, if you prefer, I can place you in a ReGen pod for a few hours.”
I shrugged. Did. Not. Care. Kovo was gone.
She worked on my leg, could have been five minutes or five hours. I had no sense of the passing of time. I wasn’t paying attention to much of anything until I heard an all too familiar voice.
“Where is she?”
Helion.
The doc was running her scans again, I assumed to make sure the healing was done. I swung my legs over the bed and stood, looking for a weapon. Anything I could use to attack him. Hurt him.
Hurt him like I was hurting.
He glanced up at that moment. Our gazes locked and it was as if he were reading my mind.
“Where is Max?” I asked.
“He is fine. He was taken to another area and released from the net. Nothing was injured but his pride.”
“Nothing but his pride?” I took another step toward him. “You.” I was so out of sorts I literally couldn’t form words with my mouth and tongue. “You.”
“I am deeply sorry, my lady. It was never my intention to see you involved in any of this.”
“You killed him!”
He looked over my head at the doctor behind me. “Do you have a light sedative, perhaps? I will deliver her safely home.”
“Don’t you dare. You are a monster! You know that?” Something weird felt like it was shot into my back. Not a needle. Just kind of flowing through my skin. I took a step. Two. I swayed on my feet and it was the Prillon I hated most in the entire universe who caught me. “Don’t touch me,” I slurred.
