Judging by the total devotion in Kovo’s eyes, he meant every word. He thought I was beautiful. That was good enough for me.
“Are you ready to tell me what troubles you?”
“It’s not trouble. It’s just unexpected. That’s all. But it does explain how I found you and knew you were mine.”
He stilled, his attention instant and intense. “How did this miracle occur? The beast always finds his mate first.”
I had to wiggle my arm free from the burrito blanket. Arm free, I tucked the top of the blanket back around me and held up my hand, palm out, for Kovo’s inspection. “Look at my palm. See anything?”
“Your hand is very small.”
“What else?”
“The fingers could be broken with very little force. The nails are not long enough to cause more than surface damage, although your fingers are long enough to go through an opponent’s eye and reach the brain as long as your opponent is not in beast mode. In that case, I believe your finger would blind him but fail to reach the brain.”
Had this Atlan spent his entire life assessing enemies and killing things or what? Jeez. How sad. That life was over. No more.
“I’m talking about the little mark in the middle of my palm. Have you ever seen anything like it before?”
He glared at my hand as if it were a total puzzle. “It resembles the Everian mark, but is not as large, nor complete.”
“That’s because my dad wasn’t a full-blooded Everian. He was only half.”
“Your father was an Elite Hunter?”
“No. Apparently, my grandfather was. He did a mission on Earth about fifty years ago.”
Kovo bristled. “He abandoned his mate and child?”
I sighed. That was the first thing Doctor Helion had said when he saw my DNA results on the medical scanners. “No. That creepy Prillon doctor, Helion? The one you threatened to kill?”
He chuckled. I failed to see what was funny.
“He must have a lot of super top secret clearance or he’s a really good hacker.”
“What is a hacker?”
“Someone that can break into computer programs that they aren’t supposed to be able to get into.”
When Kovo nodded but didn’t say anything, I continued with the relevant part of my story. “I’m part Everian. They have this weird psychic connection with their mate when they are close enough. Helion said it’s usually only between Marked Mates, where they are both Everian and their birthmarks have some kind of funky connection. But, for some reason, that part of my brain—thealienpart—decided you were mine. So now, I can sense some of your emotions. Especially when you are in your beast mode. Probably because he’s not as—”
“Good in bed. Capable of feasting on your pussy to make you scream?”
A stirring in the back of my mind that I now recognized as my newly discovered Everian psychic abilities, alerted me to the beast’s irritation with Kovo’s claim. I smiled. “He thinks he can do better.”
“I know.”
I wasn’t quite ready for another wild ride so I snuggled deeper into my burrito blanket and pressed my body as close to Kovo as I could get. Laying here with him felt safe and warm and cozy. Perfect. He felt perfect.
I tried to focus on my contented feeling and hoped whatever the odd connection I had with my beast might be, he would feel my languid state and calm down.
“You did hear that part, right? About me being an alien?”
Kovo looked at me, confused. “You are no more alien than you were before.”
“Yes, I am. I was human and now I’m one quarter from another planet.”
“You are not Atlan. You are one hundred percent alien to me. It matters not what planet, or planets, you come from.”
