“Katya.” It’s Alek. “Are you still in there?” The doorknob rattles. “Why is the door locked? Katya, are you in there?”

I can’t answer him. I can only look into the dead eyes of Jack. His blood has stopped pooling out around him finally. He’s just… lifeless. Because of me.

“Katya,” Alek snaps. “Open this door.”

When I don’t answer him, he starts pounding on it, like he’s slamming his body against the door. Then everything goes quiet.

Faintly, I hear a clicking sound before the door opens and Alek is standing there, looking at me with anger. He must be mad that I’ve been in the bathroom for a while.

That is until his eyes lower down to see Jack’s dead body and the blood everywhere.

“Shit,” he mutters before shutting the door behind him and locking it. “What happened? Katya?” He rushes over to me and grabs my arms, giving me a little shake. “What happened?”

“He… he attacked me. I pushed him back. He fell and…”

Alek looks between me and Jack and an anger forms in his eyes. “He attacked you? What do you mean?”

“He said he wanted a taste,” I spit out.

“What? A taste of what?”

“Of me. He said you hadn’t taken me yet and he wanted to know… he wanted a taste of me. He… pushed me into the counter so I pushed him back and he slipped and fell and…”

“Ok,” he says in a more gentle tone than I thought possible. And before I even know what I’m doing, I wrap my arms around Alek and cling to him tightly.

Chapter Eight

Alek

Looking at Jack’s dead body on the floor, all I feel is anger. He tried to hurt Katya. Tried to take what’s mine.

And he died for it.

I can’t say I’m completely mad. Jack was always a piece of fucking work so he won’t be missed by me. But the problem is: he is going to be missed by my other men. If they find out about this, it won’t look good for Katya.

Dimitri’s sister killing one of my men. They’ll think she did it on purpose. I have to get her out of here without anyone knowing.

She’s clinging to me. Her hands clenched in my shirt. Her head on my shoulder. I never thought she would find comfort withme. I guess it only took killing a man to make it happen. I am no saint. I’ve had darkness inside of me for a very long time. I don’t believe you can be a mafia man without some sort of darkness inside of you.

“It’s going to be ok,” I murmur into her hair. It feels nice holding her. Normally with women in the past, we’d fuck and then call it a day. Nothing serious. But with Katya, in a short amount of time, it’s become serious. It all started because I wanted revenge on her brother.

And now…

Now I’m not sure what we are. But it’s something different. Something that I know will be life changing. It already is.

“I killed him,” she whispers.

“It was an accident.”

“How can you be so nice to me? I just killed a man. One of your men.”

“From what you told me, he wanted to hurt you. You were just defending yourself.”

“You’re not going to hurt me for this?” Her voice sounds so weak and pathetic that makes me feel fucking guilty for some reason. Well, I know the reason. I just don’t want to go there.

“No. But we have to clean you up and get you out of here. I’ll have one of my most discreet men deal with Jack’s body. Now, we have to go before people come looking for us. Let’s wash your hands.”

I help Katya stand up. She’s shaking so badly that she can’t even move. I walk her over to the sink and wash the blood off her hands for her. She can’t even look at me. Her eyes keep darting back to Jack’s body and away like she still can’t believe what she did.
