I look up at him from under my hair. “I can’t rememberanything.”

Luke frowns and sits back. “You mean you don’t remember what happened to you?”

I shake my head, my mind spinning. “No, before that. I thought it was just the drugs they gave me, but…” I stare at him helplessly.

“Okay, let’s start with something easy,” he says. “What’s your name?”

My eyes burn as my brain fails to pull up an answer. “I don’t know,” I whisper.

Luke swallows, his brow creased with concern. “You mentioned drugs. Do you remember where you were? Who the people were that were giving you drugs?”

“A lab,” I whisper.

“A lab? Like a science lab?”

“I think so,” I say. “They wore white coats, but they weren’t doctors.”

He runs a hand through his hair, pushing it away from his face only for it to instantly fall forward again. “Do you remember why you were there? Or how you got there?”

“No.” I close my eyes struggling to pull up any memories from before my time in the lab. “I’m not even sure how long I was in there. The time all bled together… All I really know is that whatever they were injecting me with wasn’t getting them the results they expected.”

Luke frowns again. “Did the experiments have anything to do with you being an omega?” He pauses. “Uh, you know what that means, right?”

I nod slowly. “But I can’t explain how I know that or how I know you’re an alpha. My basic instincts are intact, I guess. It’s just my memories that are missing.”

“If your instincts are intact…” His voice trails off. “Do you understand what we are to each other?” When I don’t respond right away, he clears his throat and a pink tinge appears on his cheeks. Raising his hand, he places it in the center of his chest. “Right here. Do you feel it?”

“I…” I rub my palm over my own chest, focusing on the strange heaviness there. He’s right, there’s something… I frown, concentrating on the feeling. “Yes?”

Luke gives me a soft smile, his brown eyes twinkling. “That’s the fated mate bond.”

“Fated mate?” The words call up a hazy memory, one I can’t quite grasp, but it’s enough to know it’s important, this thing between us, even if I’m not sure exactly why.

“We’re made for each other,” says Luke. “Or the fates picked us for each other.” He chuckles. “Actually, I’m not quite sure what the ‘official’ story is, but it means we’re connected.”

That explains how drawn I’ve felt to Luke, how right it feels to be with him. We’re meant to be together. Ibelongwith him.

And that settles something inside me that I didn’t even realize was restless.

“Are you, um, okay with that?” he asks, almost hesitant.

“Yes,” I say immediately, grinning as I scoot closer to him and place my hand on his chest. “I might not remember most of my past, but this feeling tells me you’re my future.”

He gives me a warm smile, brown eyes twinkling, but before he has a chance to respond, there's a knock at the door. I jolt at the sudden noise and scramble forward until I’m almost on his lap.He wraps an arm over my shoulders, his skin hot against mine, and glares at the door as if it’s personally offended him.

“Yeah?” he snaps, the word sharp and biting as his body tenses as if preparing for an attack.

“Uh, Luke,” says a female voice. “It’s getting a little late. Are you thinking we’re going to head home tonight?”

Luke’s muscles relax and he lets out a small sigh. “I don’t think so, Macy.” He glances down at me, curled under his arm. “Things are a little more complicated than I expected.” He pauses. “I’ll—we’llbe down in a few minutes and we can make a plan.”

Luke gets out ofthe bed and pulls on a crumpled pair of pants he picks up from the floor. He glances at me, then grabs a small duffel bag from behind the chair he was sitting in earlier and digs through it.

“My stuff is going to be way too big on you, but you can’t exactly go down there naked. I’m pretty sure my wolf would have a fit,” he says as he searches through the bag.
