Jed coughed.

“Oh stop. You know it is.”

Her husband smiled back at her, and Cass loved seeing the happiness that flowed between them. She might not be great at dating, reading a guy’s interest, or relationships in general, but that didn’t mean she didn’t love romance. Jed and Shannon had it for sure.

Mack glanced at her. “What do you say, Cass? Should we try for our own twins? What do you want? A boy and a girl? Should we try for a basketball team? Stop at five or keep going?”

Jed and Shannon just stared at them.

Cass had to laugh.

Mack snickered. “They’re so easy.”

“I know.” She grabbed one of the beers Mack had brought and handed him one as well. “Shannon, I was telling Mack what a great cook you are. Tell him what we’re having.”

She did, pulling Mack into a discussion about food. He apparently wasn’t a bad cook himself, and he had definite ideas about what drink paired well with what dish.

Jed pulled Cass aside, out of his wife’s hearing. “What the hell was that?”

“What?”

“Are you guys talking about having kids already?”

“Are you high?” She stared up into his pupils.

He put a hand to her forehead and pushed her back. “Don’t be a dumbass.” He studied her. “You like this guy.”

“You told me to bring him, as a date, and get Shannon to fall for it. I am. What’s your problem?”

“Nothing. But when you used to bring Sean around, if he ever mentioned a kid, you got this sick look on your face. You’re not even dating Mack.”

“He was just kidding. Relax.”

Jed gave her a sly grin. “Oh.I see.”

She doubted he saw anything. “What’s with making fun of my taste in booze?”

“You think wine coolers are hard liquor.”

She flushed. “I do not. Unless you mix them with vodka and juice in a cup.”

“I rest my case.”

“Look, I’m here doing my part.”

Jed sighed. “I know. Mack did bring some good stuff. Did you tell him to include the kids?”

“No, he did that on his own.”

“He’s a nice guy,” Jed said, sounding satisfied. Odd.

“So?”

He looked at her. “So nothing. That was a compliment, Cass. For your date. Who’d better not be flirting with my wife,” he added in a grumble.

Cass sighed. “Just play your part and we’ll play ours. Dinner will be easy.”

And it was.
