“Super Six. Have you been?”

“It’s been a while.” Her father raved about the place, and she’d liked it enough the one time she’d gone. But somehow it hadn’t worked its way back into her routine. “It’s Korean-Hawaiian food, right? Not too fancy.”

“Not fancy, no. But delicious,” Alec said. “The char siu burger is killer good.”

“I like the pork katsu sandwich.” Mack smacked his lips. “That’s what I want. And Alec is treating, Cass, so feel free to get whatever you want.”

She shot a glance at Alec and saw him scowl at his brother in the rearview.

“Hey, I’m doing you a favor by going out with you on my day off.”

Cass shrugged. “And I’m working later. Consider this my goodwill move of the day.”

“Oh? I would have thought that would be slumming around with my brother,” Alec taunted.

She laughed and turned to see Mack glaring at the back of his brother’s seat. “You have a point.”

“Don’t agree with him,” Mack said.

“But he’s so pretty. How can I not agree with him?”

Alec patted her on the knee. “And so smart. What are you doing with Mackenzie?”

Mack sighed. Loudly. “Are we there yet?”

Surprised to find an open table, they snagged it and were soon eating and listening to Alec talk. Mack had been kidding earlier. He didn’t mind spending time with his brothers one-on-one. Without the others egging each other on, they’d forget to gang up on him and enjoy a shared camaraderie. Alec especially had always been fun to be with.

Mack watched his brother make Cass laugh.

Enjoying himself, Mack ate and smiled, chiming in here and there, mostly watching Alec talk Cass’s ear off about Dean and the coming wedding. Mack listened, noting things Cass probably didn’t realize she revealed.

Like that as gruff as she could be, she had definite attitudes about dress length, heels, and makeup. “Alec, do not make any bridesmaids wear dresses with puffy sleeves or sashes. Please.”

“I’m kidding. That was a joke.” He winked at Mack. “Only my groomsmen have to wear obnoxious fluffy pink sashes.”

“Funny.” Mack shook his head and downed more soda. He said to Cass, “At your wedding, what will your bridesmaids be wearing?”

She didn’t pause in her answer, so she’d obviously given it some thought. “The same color dress but different styles. And I won’t force them to buy superexpensive dresses. I’ve even thought about doing a destination wedding or eloping. Though my parents would have a hissy if I did that. They’re all about my life progressing according to their plans.”

“I hear you.” Alec clinked his glass against hers. “My mom and dad expect me to do a repeat performance of James’s wedding. Now, just because I helped Ashley plan it does not mean I want to make mine the exact same way.”

“You helped your sister-in-law plan her wedding?”

Mack nodded. “Alec is the most organized person I know. Ashley asked him to help, and her mother seconded that.”

“Huh.”

“Dean expects me to plan ours too,” Alec said with a huff. “But I’m not a big flowers guy, so I told him he has to figure those and the cake. I can do all the other logistical stuff. In fact, I thrive on it.”

Mack explained, “He was in logistics in the Army. You can tell.”

Cass nodded, looking from Alec to Mack. “Didn’t you say you’d been in the Air Force?” she asked him.

“Yep.”

“Have all your brothers been in the service before serving in the police department?”
