“No reason.” Just a feeling he’d had. Looking into Kellen’s eyes earlier, Logan had seen something that intrigued him, a hint of uncertainty. Maybe a need for belonging?
“Anyway, he’s surrounded by the fiercest warriors in Cross Step right here. He’s not a danger to our breeding females. Because let’s face it, if he tries anything with any of them, either our females will gut him or her mates will.”
Logan grinned. “I really hope he doesn’t try to piss off Kate. She’s beautiful but deadly.”
“She is.” Dom nodded. “And she has the perfect mates who know to treasure her.”
Logan blushed, reveling in the compliment. “So you want me off patrolling duty in the old Lawless territory to stick close to the big guy, yes?”
Dom nodded. “You’ll join Jesse on this assignment.” He paused. “You can let him know.”
Logan knew Jesse would be less than thrilled to babysit a Lawless Ravager. “Gee, thanks.”
Dom patted him on the back. “You’re welcome. Besides, this will be good for Jesse. He’s getting a little too domesticated. Kate’s going to ruin him if she keeps him so happy all the time.”
Logan laughed. “Can I tell him that?”
“Better you than me.” Dom winked and left Logan with the tray of sweets.
After devouring them in no time, Logan went in search of Jacinta and Kellen, who would likely be in the new Ravager quarters up the stairs and in the east wing of the mansion.
Those new to the Savage territory saw a mansion, but to Logan it was simply home. He, Jesse, and Kate had recently made plans to move out of their suite into a home they’d been building on the perimeter of the main field, within sight of their current home.
With so many new members and those in the city moving back, where they had safety in numbers, the entire clan had been reassessing their territory for space and tactical security.
Now that Vicki, a human, had become Prime’s queen, those Ravagers with non-Ravager mates felt safe to live on Savage land. Logan liked the direction their clan had gone, knowing how much different it would have been if the Lawlesses had taken charge.
They’d killed and raped, mauled and destroyed. All at the whim of their insane leader.
What did that make Kellen, since he’d been a part of that clan?
Time to find out, I guess.
A few minutes later, he found Kellen standing in a guest room, looking lost while Jacinta smiled up at him and pointed out a few things she thought he should know. Two of his guards argued in the hallway in a low voice, debating the merits of guard duty versus city patrol.
Logan knew what he preferred. Anything that kept him closer to his mates. “You guys can go. I got this.”
They lit up, nodded, and left. Inside the room, the other two guys were standing, their backs against the wall, looking none too friendly as they studied Kellen. Logan realized they were Jacinta’s mates, which made their keen attention and mistrust understandable. Logan didn’t think he’d like an unknown berserker so close to Kate either.
Then again, he didn’t like anyone too close to Kate lately. He sighed. This search for a fourth member of their pack had been weighing on him. And on Jesse too. Probably because they’d waited so long and fought so hard to have Kate for their own. By nature, Ravagers didn’t experience jealousy. But since she’d claimed them, they’d taken no other to bed but their own threesome. Together or apart, it was just Kate, Jesse, and Logan.
So how the hell would they manage to make room in their pack to accept another? Especially when all three of them felt the necessity to add one more but hadn’t actively sought a new mate?
He sighed. “Fellas, you can go. Jacinta, thanks. I got this.”
She patted Kellen on the arm, which made the guards growl. Kellen said nothing, just looked at them. “Good luck, Kellen. If you need anything, let me know.”
“No, don’t let her know,” one of them said.
“Lawless scum,” the other muttered as they left.
Kellen’s expression didn’t change, and Logan didn’t know what to make of him.
“Sorry to say, but you kind of brought this on yourself.” At his words, Kellen turned that intense stare on Logan. “If you’d given Prime your loyalty, you’d be Savage clan for real. Not just blood-tied.”
Kellen shrugged. “I’m honest. I don’t know him. I don’t know you. Everything I know about the Savage clan says we should be enemies.”
Logan watched Kellen, studying his body language, his voice. “But why? I know why we considered you enemies. Because you raped and killed, and not in combat. You acted without honor.”
