“Not you?”

“Nah. I only recently left my accounting firm, and I’m usually just a silent partner when it comes to Vets on the Go! I’m the magic money man who runs the budget. I don’t want to be in management.” Just imagining trying to herd the vets who he’d worked alongside gave him hives.

“Oh. Well, do you know anything else about Hector?”

“I think someone said he was taking ballroom dance classes. He volunteers at a local animal shelter, and he’s a genuinely nice guy.”

“I know all that.” She sighed. “I wish I knew why he turned all cold on me.”

“Hector’s usually pretty straightforward. What were you talking about when you noticed his attitude?”

“Nothing. I mean, I don’t know what triggered it. I just know we were walking together downtown, and after a while I noticed him being really quiet.”

“Huh.”

She bit her lip in thought, and he had to admit, Lila was one tall, gorgeous drink of water. “Do you think he got offended when I mentioned a threesome with twins? Like, that’s every girl’s fantasy.”

Evan grinned. “Every guy’s too.”

“Right? But that shouldn’t make him mad. I was teasing.”

“And Lafayette is gay, so not possible anyway.”

She paused. “Uh-oh.”

“You don’t like gay people? Yeah, that’s not going to work with Hector.”

“No, no. But I was on the phone teasing a friend of mine, who happens to be gay. We talk trash all the time. I wonder if he overheard something and took it the wrong way.”

“Why not ask him?”

“Maybe I will.” She wore a militant expression that told Evan Hector would be in serious trouble soon. “I mean, if he had a problem, why get all quiet on me? Why not ask me what I was thinking?”

“Not being Hector, I have no idea.”

“Because if that man doesn’t have the balls to be up-front with me, I have no time for him.”

“I wish more women were like you,” he said, thinking of Kenzie. “Just be honest and open about what you think. You avoid a lot of problems that way.”

“Yeah.” She walked down the bleachers and motioned for him to join her. “Come on. You can drive me home. I came with Will earlier. My car’s in the shop.”

“Yes, milady. Anything you wish.”

“See? Now if you’re saying stuff like that to Kenzie, she won’t be ditching your ass.”

He chuckled. “I’ll keep that in mind.”

“Good. Now you set me up with a time to talk to Hector where he can’t avoid me. And I’ll make sure Kenzie comes to your place, alone, and lets you say your piece.”

“I’m game.” He opened the door for her to get into his car, and she gave him a sweet smile of thanks.

“A gentleman. No wonder she’s so gone for you.”

“Not gone enough, but I can fix that. Thanks, Lila.”

“You can thank me by getting that skittish man to stay in place long enough to hear me out.”

“You got it. Plug your number into my phone, and we’ll make magic happen.” He handed her his cell and waggled his brows up and down, loving her deep laugh.
