“They can play without us if we’re late.”
“Ah, not exactly. After word about the brawl got out, we lost two players, and Netsinger’s out with the crud.”
“Well, crap.” Evan wasn’t ready to leave yet.
Fortunately the coach and a few assistants had already arrived and taken over.
“Thanks for helping. Can we call on you again?” the coach asked after shaking their hands. “You guys were a real help.”
“Fine by me,” Evan answered. “Daniel knows how to reach us.”
The coach nodded and left.
“A little free with volunteeringus,” Will emphasized.
“Oh? Was I? I mean, I’m not even part of the legal department, yet I’m somehow now a part of your team, andI have a job with you guys.”
Will scratched his head. “Eh. You have a point.”
Evan waved the kid over. “We have to go, Daniel. Wish us luck. We’re up against Food for Life today.”
Daniel rolled his eyes. “Someone really needs to help with the team names. Later, scrotumbreath.”
Will’s eyes grew wide. “What did you call him?”
“Good luck, numbnuts.” Evan saw Daniel’s look of disappointment and sighed. “Sorry, I blanked. I’ll try to come up with something better next time, assface.”
“Meh.” Yet Daniel was smiling and said to Will, “See ya, compensator.”
He turned and yelled at some teammates then took off to join the coach for more drills.
Will looked puzzled while Evan laughed.
“Oh, we made up nicknames for each other, kind of a contest to see who has the best insult.” Even as he saw the comprehension on Will’s face, he had to add, “Compensator is because he’s saying you have a small dick.”
“You know what, Evan? I figured that out.” Will slapped a big hand on Evan’s back.
Evan whooshed out a breath.
“You’d better hope we win tonight, or I’m telling Kenzie her kid brother has a potty mouth.”
“Narc.”
“Yep, that’s me. All law and order.” Will nodded to the parking lot. “Now move that fine ass, Mr. Moving Man. We have a game to win and shit to start. But I’m warning you now. Those health services chicks don’t mess around. Watch out for the small one. She plays sweeper. She’s maybe five two and as scary as Rachel.”
“Thanks for the warning.”
“Besides, if anything happens to you, the girls will kill me. They like you hanging around Kenzie to look at your pretty face.”
“As they should. I’m gorgeous.”
“And so humble. Come on.” Will checked his phone. “Oh, and don’t leave right after the game. Lila’s coming, and she wants to talk to you.” Will smirked. “Rachel is nothing compared to a pissed-off Lila. But you didn’t hear that from me.”
Evan groaned. “Well, at least we’re not playing Top Cops again. I had no idea cops had such bad attitudes.”
“You poor kid. You think they were bad? Wait until you see what the health services team does to fresh meat.”
