He laughed. “Well, aren’t you red.”

“You like making me blush.”

“I really do.”

“Aw,” Rachel said, having returned with Will. “Aren’t you guys too cute.”

“Yeah, yeah.” Will put a hand over Rachel’s mouth. “Look, man, we’re short a guy. I don’t suppose you could hop in and play tonight? We’re the Legal Eagles, I think I told you before.”

“I would, but I don’t have any gear.” He stopped himself. “Actually, I have some gym gear in my car. But no cleats or shin guards.”

“You don’t need cleats to play, and we have extra shin guards you can use.”

Will and Rachel looked so hopeful.

Kenzie sighed. “It’s just a game, Will. I’m sure you’ll survive.”

“No.” Will glared at her. “How many times do I have to tell you? This isnotjust a game. This is the future at stake, woman.”

“What future?” Evan asked.

“It’s about our reputation. And bragging rights. And shoving their snotty, arrogant, prick faces into the dirt.” Will glared at a few guys on the other team, who sneered and shot him the bird.

“Friends of yours?”

A woman wearing a blue County Kings jersey shook her head. “Fucking lawyers.”

Will said something uncomplimentary back then shrugged when Rachel told him to calm down. “What?”

Rachel shook her head. “It’s a long-standing rivalry that continues through every sport season. We start with soccer, go through basketball, come back to softball, and every now and then throw flag football in the mix. But it gets pretty rough, so they’ve been cutting that out.” She waved at a pretty woman in a gray-striped jersey similar to Will’s. “It’s a King County thing. We’ve got cops, firefighters, lawyers, corrections, animal control, you name it. That’s Jemma over there. We like her.”

“She’s a great player.” Will waved as well. “Married to a buddy of mine.”

“An assistant DA,” Rachel added.

Will turned to Evan, so earnest. “Come on, man. We need some fresh blood. The other team was talking smack about me. We can’t let Parks & Wreck beat us.”

“But I’m not a county employee.”

“So what? You were military. That counts.”

“It does?” Rachel raised a brow.

“Hush, woman. We’ll call him a potential witness. That’s close enough.”

“Witness?” Evan asked while Will nagged him to go get his gym clothes.

“I’m an assistant DA for the county. You’re in the white-collar league tonight, buddy.”

Evan blinked. “You’re a lawyer?” Will looked more like a buff blue-collar guy. He seemed so down to earth. And heck, he was dating Rachel.

“I know.” Will grinned. “Everyone’s always stunned when I’m out of the office and out of my suit and tie. This is the real me.” He motioned to his shorts and gray jersey. “I’m a T-shirt kind of guy.”

“Great. So if I play tonight, you’ll leave me alone?”

“Sure, sure. Just this one game.” He gave his teammates on the field a thumbs-up, and they cheered. “Now, college pro, make us look good.”

Evan didn’t get the impression Will would leave him alone after just one game.
