Though she knew better than to get involved with Evan, she reached out. The contact sent waves of desire to every point of her body. Her heart raced, and her senses went on overload.

Evan seemed to stiffen, as if affected. Or that could just be wishful thinking—Kenzie not wanting to be the only one weirded out by such chemistry.

Am I that hard up that a simple handshake makes me sweat?

Sadly, yes.

She disengaged with a smile, ignoring Daniel’s watchful gaze. “When do you think you might be able to fix the water heater? Because honestly, that’s my new priority.”

“Yeah.” Daniel gave a heartfelt sigh. “This morning was brutal.”

Kenzie ran a hand through her hair. “He’s not wrong.”

Evan sipped his coffee, his gaze intent. “How about now?”

Kenzie frowned. “What about now?”

“I think he means he wants to fix the water heater now,” Daniel explained. “Sounds good. Let’s go.”

“Hold on.” Kenzie frantically tried to remember what state she’d left the house in. Had she put her dirty clothes in the hamper, or were her bra and panties still lying on the rug in her bathroom? And did she really want Evan in her home again when it was all she could do not to think of him?

“Kenzie, what’s to think about? I can take him home. Go do whatever you have to. I want hot water,” Daniel said.

“No, it’s fine. I mean, we can go now.” She gathered her things, still unsure how Evan had gotten an invitation to her house when she’d planned on never seeing him again. “Lila and I will do lunch later in the week.” Or so she texted her friend.

“I’ll ride with Evan to show him where to go,” Daniel offered.

Evan cleared his throat. “I was there just a few days ago, remember?”

“Oh, right.” Daniel grinned. “But I’ll still ride with you. Kenzie drives like a blind nun.”

She scowled. “What’s that supposed to mean?”

Daniel snorted. “If you went any slower, we’d be going back in time.”

Evan coughed to muffle a laugh, but she saw it.

“Ha. You think that’s funny? You get to drive Daniel, and he gives the termrunning at the mouthall new meaning.”

“Ha ha.” Daniel made a face.

She automatically made one back then realized what she’d done.

Evan laughed and tugged Daniel to follow him. “Feel free to chatter on the way. Anything’s gotta be better than Smith whining about work all day.”

Daniel did talk, and talk and talk, on purpose to feel Evan out. Different from the first time they’d met, this Evan seemed cool and collected. And far from a moving guy. He drove a Lexus. And not an old-guy kind of luxury car but an RC F sport coupe. The dude looked really polished, even in jeans and a polo shirt. Knowing Evan had worked at a prestigious accounting firm explained a few things.

And seeing him with Kenzie had been…interesting.

“So.”

Evan glanced at him before looking back at the road. “So.” He drove with cool competence, not speeding but taking the turns smoothly. Daniel would love to see what the car could do if Evan opened it up.

“This is, like, a really great car. It’s got high-backed seats, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth?”

“Hell yeah.” Evan grinned, his teeth straight and white, his sandy-brown hair a lot like Daniel’s but styled. “This baby can move. Five-liter, V8 engine, 467 horsepower. It’s sleek, designed for speed, and really hugs the roads.”
