“Fuck, Kenzie. Cut it out.” He wiped at his eyes. “No one must ever know I cried.”

“And we don’t tell them you proposed while making love to me.”

“Deal.” He smiled. “Now how about we have some hot shower sex and you scream my name?”

The shower sex sealed it. He shouted; she shouted; they both came. Twice. Then he put the ring she’d brought with her onto her finger. It fit her perfectly.

Just as he was tucking her into bed with him, messages arrived from Rachel and Lila confirming no one had expected her to come home tonight, or at least they’d hoped she wouldn’t, and Daniel would be taken care of.

He grinned. “Hey Kenzie, Ra—”

Kenzie bolted out of bed.

He heard her throwing up and grimaced, hoping she didn’t feel as bad as she sounded.

But a strange, crazy thought struck and made him dizzy with want.

He hurried into the bathroom to see her draped over the toilet. “Ah, so lovely.”

“Shut up.” She shot him the finger. “Oh man. I feel good one minute, sick the next.” She teared up. “Evan, I wanted to get you sick so you’d be stuck with me taking care of you. That’s not very nice, is it?”

He helped her rinse out her mouth, though she hadn’t thrown up anything. He drew her with him back to bed and pulled a trash can next to it. Then he sat her up and looked into her lovely face. “Kenzie, I need to ask you something important.”

“I already said yes, Evan.” She stared down at her hand with loving adoration. “I love this ring.”

The flawless marquise-cut, colorless diamond was perfect for Kenzie. And something he’d very much hoped she’d like.

“Kenzie, when’s the last time you had your period?”

She blinked, stared at him in shock, then looked down, twisting her ring. “Wait. Wait. It was…”

He leaped from the bed and returned with a calendar from the other room.

She frowned at it. “I should have had it last week, I think. But Evan, I’m on birth control. I swear. I can show you my pills at home.”

“I believe you. But you’ve been sick and, let’s face it, emotional lately.”

“Yes, but…but…Daniel had the same virus.”

“Daniel had it for one day. He and I have been texting. He’s just been bummed about you and me and pretending to still be sick to skip school.”

“Oh.” She swallowed. “Do you think I could be pregnant?”

“We should get a pregnancy test and find out.”

She gripped his hand tightly. “Is it bad that I hope I am?” The dawning joy on her face made him love her even more.

“Is it bad that I’m thrilled I might have knocked you up? Then you’re stuck with me for good.”

“Evan. I’m stuck with you with or without a baby. You have my heart.”

He held her close. “We should get some rest. Then we’ll go tomorrow and get a few tests for you to take. But, I mean, you probably just have the flu. It’s just me wishing for something we should take our time thinking about.”

“Sure. Yes. Plenty of time for us to think about a child.”

He turned out the light. They got under the blankets. Five minutes had passed before Evan turned on the light. “Should I get the car?”

“Yes, let’s get dressed. I need to know.”
