“Well, I’m sure she’ll take that into account before marrying anyone. And unless Sue is a blood relation, it’s not incest. Okay?”
Reynolds perked up. “Great. Thanks a lot, Flash. I appreciate it.” The boy paused by the door. “Please don’t tell anyone I said anything.”
“Not a word.” Ever.
Mitch hurried to use the bathroom and leave before anyone else came to the door. But outside, he only saw Simon bending down to tie his shoe.
“Hi, Simon.”
Mitch didn’t think Simon was aware of Mitch and Becca’s new relationship. Whatever the hell it was.
“Hey, Flash.” The boy stood and smiled. “Have a nice weekend.”
“You too.” He and Becca had decided to keep their association private until they could figure out what it was, exactly. Because from what he gathered from Becca, it was more a friends with benefits than boyfriend/girlfriend type deal.
He wasn’t sure he liked her definition, but for now, he’d run with it. Anything that got him closer to the woman worked for him.
His phone buzzed. He glanced down and smiled at the text she’d sent.
On for Sunday? Simon has a party to go to.
He replied,Yep. You and me and my hot tub. I’m in.
Bye.She’d sent a happy face with hearts in its eyes.
Stupid Mitch wished that emoji meant the real thing. Unfortunately, he had no idea what she saw when she looked at him.
“You owe me, Bragg.” Reynolds mock-punched Simon in the arm.
“I know, I know.” Simon liked the report he’d gotten from Felix. “So?”
Reynolds snickered. “Think he about shit a brick when I mentioned being in love with my ‘stepsister.’ But he was cool. Listened to me, told me I had nothing to worry about with incest, then waited for me to leave. But I think I scared him, because he left the office in a hurry. You still want Rodriguez to corner him with a sob story about his alcoholic grandparents?”
Rod’s grandmother liked her vodka every night, so his mom had taken it away. Then his grandma started hitting the cough syrup a little too hard. Of course, she’d also been coughing a lot due to a cold. Rod thought the cough syrup might have alcohol in it but wasn’t sure. Still, Simon thought the guy could spin it.
To Reynolds, Simon said, “Um, ask Rod to grab Flash in the restroom. But don’t let on I told you guys to talk to him, okay? When the season ends, this’ll be a great gag to brag about.”
“How we pranked Flash? Hell yeah.” Reynolds was a junior. Not too bright, but a good guy. “Later, man.”
“See ya. Have a nice weekend with your ‘stepsister.’” Sue, his girlfriend, had two dads. No way one of them was stepping out to date Reynolds’ mom.
They both snickered at that.
A moment later, Rod moved past him for the restroom, and Simon heard him say, “Hey, Flash. Can I talk to you for a minute?”
