Caspien. Varethiel.
Caspien. Varethiel.
Help.
Her pleas for help, knowing she is with my brother… it’s a riptide tearing me in two. But what’s almost worse is when those words stop coming.
I’ve sent a wisp to update Aiden to get every Fae, vampire, and witch on the watch, while Niko has alerted every Guardian.I will kill my brother when I find them.
Ever since her messages stopped, I’ve been doing my best to get a message back to Nissa that I’m coming. To give her any comfort I can.
Even though we have no idea where to go now that we’re here.
Enzo and Aiden are at the front steps, waiting on us with a few of their Guardians. The rest are out with the Night Watch, the vampire guardians who work the dark streets of Varthiel.
Niko extends his hand to Enzo, and Aiden turns to me. “I can’t promise anything, but we have a lead. It is dangerous, and risky, but we should hear back soon if it’s going to give us the information we need.”
“What lead? Who’s the information coming from?” I demand, looking between him and Enzo .
“It’s a credible source,” is all Enzo says.
Nissa’s voice begins rippling through my brain again.
“It’s Caspien! Please. Help!”
“Varethiel, please!”
“Please hear me…”
The brokenness has me dropping down on my haunches. “NO!” I roar out as each panicked word breaks me further.
Enzo’s communication device that connects him with Varethiel’s vampire guards pulses and he turns away from us. I have never interacted with the Night Watch but have heard the rumors about how impressive they are. The vampires use their natural skills to guard the city through the night. I pray to the Goddess they can use those skills now to help us.
“Talk to me, Nissa! I’m Here! I’m Coming!”I’m running my hands through my hair as I try to get my message back to her.
Niko grabs my shoulders, and my focus is drawn back to his pale blue eyes, alight with determination.
“We have a location. We need to go.” Enzo yells out the location just as thunder shakes the ground around us and the rain begins to pour down from the sky.
“Goddess, help me…”is the last thing I hear before we all disappear into smoke and water.
As soon as we materialize, Aiden grabs me before I can take off running into the building. Rain soaking us through, “I’llhandle Caspien. You get your mate. Enzo and Niko can handle any unexpected threats and take care of the other girl. Everyone else, take the doors around the building! He doesnotget away.” He yells the last part to the guardians and night watch who accompany us.
Even though I want to be the one to go after Caspien, every cell in my body is screaming out for Nissa. Every fiber of my being, craving to find her, hold her, be with her.
The cobblestones around us slowly begin to shake. We all look at one another for half a breath before we take off running.
“I’m coming.”
Chapter
Thirty-Seven
NISSA
Poisons and potions or not, I won’t go down without a fight. I invoke every last flicker of magic that is left in my blood to fight. One last effort I pull from my fear in this moment, from my anger for Nova and my love for Cillian.
The foundation of the building shakes. The brittle and broken door slides off the top hinge in the tremor. It isn’t strong, but it is just enough to give me hope…until it doesn’t.
