She scrunched her face, thrumming her fingers on her chin in thought. “Fair point. Being caught out there isn’t great. But living in hiding isn’t either.”
I got her point, but I was used to playing it cautious. Still, I wasn’t even an omega yet. “If I turn omega, I probably won’t be able to travel again at all until I’m claimed. Getting possibly snatched up by an alpha here is bad enough, but one overseas with different omega rights laws…” I trailed off, shaking my head quickly at the nightmarish possibilities.
Lila’s shoulders sagged. “Right, so this actually might be your last chance to travel with a lower risk since you aren’t perfuming now.”
I poked out my chin. She had a point. And I really did want to go. “Fine, I’m in.”
Lila raised her arms in the air. “Yeah. Last minute vacation. Girl’s trip.”
Kai pumped his hands in the air. “Girls with an incubus trip.”
We both looked at him with incredulous faces.
He shrugged. “I go where my future omega goes.”
I rubbed my temples. “Please, don’t say that.”
“I can make no promises. What if my woman gets taken? A bodyguard never hurts.”
Lila pointed at him. “He can’t stay in our room.”
He gave her an offended scowl. “I’ll get my own room. You don’t have to worry about me. In fact, I’ll pay all expenses when we get there.”
She clapped in approval. “Ok, dude gets one point from me. You’re still on probation, so don’t get comfortable.”
He gave her a salute. “Yes, ma’am.”
I looked at them both, feeling more than overwhelmed. I had so many feelings swirling around me that I could hardly think. I was still processing the death of my father, my losing battle against my omega status, and now I was attached to an incubus alpha that made me sweat just hearing his voice.
What the hell was I going to do?
CHAPTER4
KAI
Itook a flying leap and flopped onto the sectional couch in our basement den.
Ty Asare, who was sitting on the far end of the large leather couch, lifted slightly in the air upon my impact. He gave me a disapproving glare with his light brown eyes, and I responded with a shrug.
“It’s nice to be home again,” I announced. I was back at our mansion about twenty minutes north of the city. It was a gated, large four-level space with six bedrooms, a pool, a garden, and a basketball court. It was pretty much our sanctuary. “What cha writing about?”
Ty moved his laptop, which was like another appendage to him, to the floor, stretching his long legs in front of him. “A supernatural murder mystery. This team has to go to a small town where people are going missing, and all that’s left behind is their skin.”
I stretched my lips back in a grimace. “Sounds like some fun, happy stuff.”
Ty nodded, and I wasn’t sure if he was getting my sarcasm. The guy loved anything dark, and all he wrote about was dark fantasy, horror, and thrillers. Some of his stuff actually creeped me out, and I was a demon. He hadn’t always been that way, and I often found myself missing the old Ty.
“How is she?” He asked. “Does she know we’ve been watching over her from afar all this time?”
I crossed a leg over the other, stifling a yawn. I hadn’t gotten much sleep the last few nights. I was supposed to be watching over her. More so since her change was coming on. I’d been mostly honest with her, but if she knew we’d basically stalked her, she’d freak out. I’d been respectful and maintained as much of her privacy as I could, although it was ridiculously challenging. “She’s great.”
Ty frowned at my silence. “I take it you didn’t tell her. She’s going to be pissed. How is she?”
“She’s sad, just like you’d expect.”
He slouched down in his seat. “I can imagine. I wish I could meet her for real. I know she has her friends, but she must be lonely. I know how that feels. I could talk to her and maybe cheer her up.”
If I was drinking something, I would have spit it out. “In what world would you be the one out of the four of us to cheer her up? If anything, you’d make her more depressed.”
