“We’ve been looking for an omega that would be the right fit for us for some time. We had a non-magic omega, but she passed almost ninety years ago. It broke us for a while.” He paused, looking away, but I caught the pained look on his face before he turned. He gave a shuddering sigh before turning back to me. “It was told to us by a prophet that you were our omega, and you would indirectly come to us. Therefore, when your father summoned me, I knew that was the moment. And I was right.”
It was making so much sense to me now. My father was a smart man. He’d done his research on this pack before summoning Kai. He’d made first contact with the demon instead of the others because he considered Kai the riskiest of the group. If he could trust the demon, the rest would be easy. In theory.
It was all a fine idea, but none of it changed my mind. I did not want to be an omega, and I didn’t want to be with an alpha and definitely not a pack of them.
“Well, I’m sorry to let you and my father down, but I am not going to be your omega.”
He shifted to the side, balancing his head on his hand. His shirt shifted, revealing a sliver of his tight stomach. It looked so smooth and perfect with just a sliver of hair down from his belly button. I wondered if he would taste like his cinnamon smell.
I shook my head quickly of the thought. This lust fog needed to get the hell on.
“Kitty cat,” he began with almost a purr, “give us a chance.”
I could feel my panties grow damp at the sound of his voice, my knees weakening. I sat down at the head of my bed, near my pillow. I bit the inside of my cheek to stay focused and not get carried away by the base of his voice. “No, thank you.”
He narrowed his eyes in dismay. “You are in a dangerous place right now. Your magic spell is fading. Any moment now, your scent will come out. Not all of us alphas are good, and from what I can see, you don’t have much security around you. We can help.”
I peered at him. “How did you get in?”
He wiggled his brows playfully. “Your wards keep out enemies. I am not an enemy. It also let in your father and friends. I’m a friend.”
I lifted my upper lip up in a silent snarl. He wasn’t my damn friend. My ward was good. If the magic didn’t sense any evil intent, it made sense he could get past, and the rest of his own magic got him in physically. However, just because he didn’t mean to hurt me, it didn’t mean I wanted him as an alpha despite what my traitorous vagina was telling me. “I am well aware of my precarious situation. And I loved that my father was looking out for me, but this was not the way.”
Kai considered me, pressing his lips together, and then, suddenly, he was moving up my bed and sitting right beside me. I leaned away from him but not before getting a whiff of his scent, sending another shiver through me.
He folded his arms behind his head, looking way too comfortable on my bed. Had he been on my bed when I was out? Had he been on my bed with me when I was sleeping? I grumbled under my breath at the thought. He was sexy, but that didn’t prevent him from being creepy.
He brushed the back of his hand over my thick curly hair, and a whine of need from the light contact pushed up my throat before I could stop it. My face heated with anger, and I angrily batted him away. Had he heard that?
He grinned, dropping his hand. “Look kitty cat, I made a promise to your father to look out for you, and I intend to keep it. You can push me away, but in your current state, I cannot leave you. Even if you don’t choose us, until you choose someone, we will look out for you.”
I eyed him skeptically. I hardly believed he would back down so easily. I’d never met an alpha who would.
Then again, his proposal didn’t sound so bad. I was honestly clueless about what to do. My last resort was to check into an omega clinic when I thought I was nearing heat. It was basically a hotel that helped unattached omegas so they didn’t get snatched up on the street, especially when in heat. They offered medication to help make the heats more tolerable, but I heard it wasn’t that much help. As another option, they also offered approved alphas to help you during your heat. I wasn’t a fan of that option.
No one in my life knew I was an omega outside of Lila and Chilli, and neither could help me in my heat or stop some superpowered alpha from tossing me over his shoulder and taking me away forever. Just the thought of it chilled me.
Then there was that ghoul sighting. Maybe my mind was playing tricks on me and he hadn’t said that my time was ticking, but ignoring it felt dumb. Being on high alert for any possible threat was a necessity now.
Maybe having Kai around, for now, would help as security as I searched for a way to stop the omega change. Having someone to have my back wasn’t a bad thing. I wasn’t weak, but I wasn’t invincible. Plus, he was cute eye candy. “Fine. You can look out for me. But what does that mean?”
He scooted down in the bed, gazing over me. “I’m going to be your roommate for a while. I’ve got to keep you in my sight.”
Warmth flooded my core when he spoke, his eyes boring into me with lustful intensity. Once again, I remembered I was not clothed beneath the blanket and only inches from him. “I only have one bedroom.”
He looked from side to side as if assessing the size of the bed. “This is plenty big enough for us both, and I only have a duffle bag I brought with me from the house I share with my pack.”
Was he out of his mind? I was this close to ripping off the covers and dry humping him. There was no way he could be in here with me. “You are not sleeping in the same bed as me. I can only stand so much. You are still very much a stranger. I don’t know if I can trust you.”
He sighed, rolling his head back like a spoiled brat. “You do realize if I wanted to hurt you, I could have. I’ve been in your apartment since before you got home.”
“Yes, and why did you mess with my thermostat and lights? Was that part of being funny?” I made quotation marks with my fingers when I said the word ‘funny’ because it was anything but funny.
He lifted a shoulder looking far from remorseful. “It was too hot for me in here, and you were sleeping, it was a waste of electricity to keep the lights on.”
I cut my eyes at him. “How economical of you. You’ll be sleeping on the couch.”
He groaned before batting thick lashes at me. How could a demon look so damn harmless? I suppose that was the game. He mastered getting a person to let their guard down, and then they were easy prey. I had to stay smart with this. His sexiness would not distract me any more than it already had.
