Kai frowned. “Looks like the party is over. So sad.”

He disappeared in a cloud of black smoke and reappeared in front of me.

Chilli moved near me again, protective.

Kai gave her a patient nod of the head. “Ma’am, I believe we met some time ago. I’m Kai, one of Billie’s alphas. I’m going to take her home now.”

Chilli moved away with an open-mouth stare. Wow, he was so professional with it. I bit my lip, fighting off a wide grin. He lowered and reached behind my knees, an arm on my back, and he lifted me in his arms. “You should really get a better security system for this place and stop discriminating against kind-hearted demons such as myself.”

I laid my head on his shoulder, not caring that I was having a damsel moment. “Did you have to kill all of them? We need to question them.”

“I left one of them alive downstairs. Daniel teleported in and got it.”

I closed my eyes in relief. Finally, we would be getting some answers.

CHAPTER19

KAI

My omega was an ass-kicker. We kept thinking she needed us to protect her, but she had proven time and time again that she was more than capable. Still, seeing her looking so exhausted troubled me. Her magic was strong, but there was a limit. I was just angry I had not gotten to her faster. However, there had to have been twenty demons that crashed into the building. How they broke the ward to get in was the biggest mystery. The place was supposed to be fortified.

Still, it was only because they broke the ward that I was able to help. Daniel teleported the others there after I made a call to him, but I didn’t wait. My only focus was getting to Billie.

When we returned home, I took her to her bathroom. She was covered in gore and it kind of smelled, masking her glorious scent. I sat her on the closed lid toilet seat and turned on the shower. A bath would have been better, but I was sure she didn’t want to sit in a heated pool of blood, dirt and other things.

She lay her head on the side of the sink. “I feel like an old lady. And it’s fucking hot in here.”

It was not hot. I had a much higher tolerance of the cold, which made me sensitive to heat. If I was fine, then there was no reason she should be so warm. I walked over to her and felt her forehead. She was burning up. In fact, she was sweating. “Are you okay?”

She grabbed her stomach, closing her eyes. “I haven’t felt right since the attack. I feel weak, and my head hurts. I think I shouldn’t have tried those kill words.”

I didn’t think that was the issue. “Are you cramping?”

She opened one suspicious eye. “A little. I think it’s like indigestion. And no, it’s not what you think it is. It’s stress. I just need a shower. Go away.”

I huffed. She really enjoyed pushing me away. “I am trying to help you.”

“I need to take a shower. I’m strong enough to do that. I think. Doesn’t matter. I will make it work.”

Still, she wasn’t making a move to stand up. “Can I at least help you get out of your clothes?”

She lifted her hand halfway to shoo me away.

I looked up at the ceiling, exasperated with her. I knew she was stubborn, but this was too much. I’d already seen her naked. Why the modesty now? “Would it be better if I undressed too? I can help you in the shower.”

She snorted. “Absolutely not.” She scrunched her face, clutching at her stomach again.

Billie was a smart woman. I had no doubt she’d read all the books about omegas. She had to know that she was in heat. She was now starting to perfume like crazy, even through the demon gore stench. It was thick in the air. Hell, I wouldn’t be surprised if alphas passing in the neighborhood could scent her. I was practically straining in my pants.

“You’re going to keep hurting if you don’t get some relief. Why are you afraid?”

She pressed her knees together as if trying to hold in her scent and the slick that I was sure was running down her thighs. “I’m not an animal. I can control myself. I hate this.”

She said it with a strained voice, almost as if she were near tears. It broke my heart. I hated seeing her suffer, but I hated that she couldn’t give in to what she had become. I thought, after her time with each of us, that she had changed. She never complained, and from what we’d all gathered, she was enjoying herself. Was it because of the attacks? Or was the real heat scaring her? It would be very different from the mini heats she had experienced. She had more control over those. This, she could not fight. She would have to just accept it.

I took a step back to the door. “You’re safe here, Billie. You will still be you if you give in to the heat. But you will not be able to function if you don’t give in to who you are. And the more you scent, the more of a beacon you will be. I don’t want to scare you. I’m just trying to give you the facts.”

I opened the door and stepped out. “I’m going to wait in your room. Call me if you need me.”
