He turns on the machine, spreads the towels and gel on her stomach, and starts moving the small probe. The heartbeat blares and my heart stops.

“That’s the baby’s heartbeat,” Slash says, moving the probe.

“Do you know if it’s a boy or girl,” Athena asks, staring at the monitor.

I can’t see anything, but I’m so dumb-struck. I take Athena’s hand and stare at the monitor.

“It’s too soon to know the sex, but I do know that it’s two babies. This is one, and this is the other one. They’re the size of a pea,” Slash hums, moving his fingers on the monitor.

“Tw . . ins,” I croak.

“Oh my, twins. This is so exciting. Oh my God!”

“Yes, twins. In a few weeks, we could do the ultrasound again and see if we can see the sex,” Slash says, smiling.

“Okay, we’ll be here,” I say, looking at the screen.

“Baby, I love you,” I hum, looking at her. I run my fingers through her soft hair.

“I love you.”
