"No," he said quickly. "Just the doors and hallways. And the entries and exits."
Rather than murder him where he stood, she controlled herself. "Fine. Let's go."
Chapter20
He drove her car to her apartment in silence. Then she got to watch him remove several cameras from her lobby and entranceway. She was trembling with rage when he removed the one pointed at her door from the hallway.
She unlocked her door, and he followed her in. She said, “You said no cameras are in here.”
“Yes, but there’s a tracker in your badge.”
“My badge?”
“Yes. I placed it while you were seeing patients.”
“My badge is at the hospital. I somehow forgot it in the midst of the total betrayal,” she hissed.
“I’ll come by next week and remove it.”
“Great. Tell me, Mr. Police officer. Are you sorry about this at all?”
“No.” He had a ghost of a smile. “I did my job. I didn’t pick this assignment, but I did what had to be one by putting one foot in front of the other. None of this was in my control. Same as it wasn’t in your control the day El Socio came to you to find his kids.”
“That was El Socio? The custody guy? He made it through hospital security?”
“Which is why they put me in the hospital. And who better? He had such disdain for the gringo hospital security.”
“I deserved to know.” She crossed her arms in front of her chest.
“How would you have lived your life differently if you knew the parent of one of your patients was a dangerous criminal. Would you stop going to work stop seeing patients?”
“No. This is my city, my people, if I don't, then—”
Sean finished for her, “Who will? This is my city too. I promised to serve and protect the citizens, and you. I was protecting you.”
“By lying to me?”
“You want some truth? Here it is. You lie to yourself all the time. In the bedroom, you’re a glorious, fierce tiger who knows what she wants. At work, you're a doormat.”
“A doormat?”
“Yeah, the office staff pushes you around. The other doctors do the same.”
“They do not. Clarissa and Avigayle are my friends.”
“They’re your subordinates. I meant Dr. Gallo. You won’t even walk by his office. He got you called in when you weren’t on call. You’re happy to work Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Eve, and New Years? They don’t even give you a bonus.”
"I'm the newest member of the staff."
"You're worth twenty of them. Are you scared to stand up for yourself?"
"Because I was held responsible for a dead baby as an intern! I spent the rest of my internship justifying my actions!” The words burst out of her mouth.
He blanched for a second. “Were you really responsible? I was there for a month, and I NEVER, not once heard anyone mention it. So it can’t be a big deal now.”
“It was a set of twins. I focused my efforts on the girl who had a better chance of surviving.”
“It’s called triage. Tough calls happen. Internship was three years ago, right? You’ve certainly done penance by now,” he pointed out, not pulling a punch now.
