“You also make me sandwiches late at night.” He winks.

“Ah, you’re going to be the one making the sandwiches.”

“God, I need our kid to have your eyes,” he says with a fiery stare.

“Just so long as they have your kissable lips.” I bring my foot to his leg, moving it up his hard calf into his lap.

He presses his eyes closed. “Jesus Christ, woman. We need to hurry this meal along.”

We skip dessert, settle the bill, and head straight over to the hotel I reserved.

“I’ll pay,” he says as we approach the lobby.

“I already did.”

“I thought you didn’t want to use your credit card?”

“It’s fine. My brother knows where I am and I have to speak with my father soon, anyway.”

I go to the front desk to get the room key, and the concierge asks me to wait off to the side.

After a minute, I ask, “Is something wrong with my room?”

The man forces a smile to his uptight lips. “We’ll have the matter sorted in just a moment.”

A minute later, two police officers charge through the door and head to the front desk.

The concierge gestures to us. “She’s right there.”

My brow knits. “Huh?—”

“Ma’am, you have the right to remain silent.”

“Whoa!” I put my hands up defensively as they storm toward me.

“Anything you say can?—”

Toxic steps between me and two giant uniformed men. “You better back the hell away!”

“Sir, move aside.”

“Like hell!”

What’s happening hits me like a sharp slap to the face.

My father did this. He must have had his bank alert him to any purchases and called ahead to tell the concierge to have me arrested.

Toxic looks like he’s about to murder these men for me, and as much as I’m flattered, I can’t have that.

“It’s okay,” I tell Toxic, moving out from behind him. “I’ll go with them.”

“But you’ve done nothing wrong!”

“This is my father’s doing,” I say quietly, walking towards the police officers.

They turn me roughly to face the glass wall.

“Hey! Be careful with her!” Toxic snarls right in the cop’s face. “She’s pregnant.”
