Chapter 27

Ali Kat

“This is exactly what we need right now!” Ted enthuses.

“No—absolutely not!”

“I have to say, I kind of agree with Trainwreck,” Caleb sneers.

I smile at Caleb for agreeing with me, but quickly replace the grin with a glare when his words fully process in my tired brain.

“Ali Kat is America’s Sweetheart,” Caleb continues. “She’s meant to be sweet, cute, wholesome—not a rancher. They’re gonna take one look at her farm and start associating her with manure.”

“It’s the only way we can get Might Be Meghan,” Jenna pleads. “Come on! We need to rise above the current narrative, and we can’t do that in her Hollywood home with her Hollywood lifestyle. After the Mitchels’ interview with Hillary Basion, people are going to think Ali saw what she wanted, and went for it, regardless of Brett’s poor wife and baby.”

I throw my hands in the air out of frustration. “But they lied! They twisted what happened!”

“Yeah, and the only thing they’re showing on air is you throwing your wine cooler at Rose. How do you think that looks?” Ted cuts in.

I look around the room for an ally. “I don’t see how Might Be Meghan can help the situation.”

“People trust her! She has a lot of big names on her side, and she’s not interested in malicious gossip. She’s associated with Remi Icor, Gabriel Icor, gosh—Cassius Lavinius for crying out loud,” Jenna shouts.

“Word has it, she was shacking up with that Whent guy,” Ted chimes in. “You know, your date forthatnight.”

“That’s it—I’m never going to sit down and interview with Might Be Meghan. Not when she’s dated Alistair Whent.”

“This is the best shot we have at a career reset,” Jenna says. “That interview with Brett and his wife is a career killer! We have to fight back—hard!”

“Time to bring in the secret weapon.” Ted smirks and nods to Jenna who gets up and opens the door.

In walks Alistair Whent, who I haven’t seen since the night of the bar brawl.

I blink, my jaw gaping open. “Alistair…um…I...”

“It’s good to see you,” he says with an impish grin. “Oh, and here.” He takes something from his pocket and hands it to Jenna.

“What’s that?”

“The footage I purchased from Saint Cloud.”

My head snaps towards Jenna. “How’d you get his number from my phone?”

She points to Ted. “I asked him to ask for the footage from Alistair for me.”

“Oh, well, I don’t think it will do any good,” I mumble.

“It probably won’t,” Jenna says, “but we need to see this from all angles. Dallanger already gave me the club footage and I’ll be going through that too.”

Ted gets up, standing next to Alistair, wide grin on his face. “Alistair here is going to accompany you to the family farm, and Might Be Meghan and her crew will capture it all.”

“Might Be Meghan?” I look to Alistair. “But…didn’t she date you?”

Alistair chuckles lightly. “We know each other, yes—very well. And…we’re perfectly capable of working together in a professional capacity.”

“Yeah, that’s great, but still—it’s a no! There’s no way I’m going back to my parents’ farm. There’s no way they’d let me back.”

“Actually, you might want to look at this,” Jenna says, clicking a button on a remote.
