“If you tell them, they’ll try to talk me out of it, and we both know it has to be done. Let Ali hate me. It’s not like I’d ever have a chance with her anyway. After all, that guy on her feed is quite handsome and seems to treat her well.”
Jake kicks a stone, grumbling under his breath.
“Shops getting sold. I’ll be moving into the city in the next month.”
“You’re not cut out for the city.”
“Apparently, I’m not cut out for anywhere.”
“Pa would still have you.”
“I doubt Ali would appreciate that.”
“I don’t know, that Alistair guy is nice, but I think they have more of a friend thing going on. He’s so pretty. Prim pushed him over into the mud, which he didn’t much appreciate. He freaked out something fierce.”
“Well, I hope that one day we can meet up again for a beer. I’m sorry it has to end like this. I really do have the best intentions for your family, I just don’t see any way around what I’m about to do.”
“I understand, and I do appreciate that you’re trying to make things right. I hope to see you around.” Jake buries his hands in his pockets and starts walking towards his old Ford truck.
He doesn’t wait for a reply, but that’s classic Jake. When he’s done with something, there’s no lingering. He moves on.
If only I could stay the same.
