“Did you just say you have three passports?” I question. “Who has three passports?” It doesn’t sound real.
“Actually, Nkem has three as well. American, Canadian and Nigerian.”
“Well, I only have one.”
“How very American,” she answers, rolling her eyes at me. “You know, Teni used to joke that if I married him, I would have four, like it was the best reason to marry him.”
“I’m guessing he was talking about the American passport.” I ask
“Yep, and he likes to talk like I needed the passport more than I needed to live. Plus, how lucky, I am that he was dating me” A sad chuckle escapes her “You know I once heard him call me damaged and half baked. The few reasons I broke up with him. He kept trying to make me feel like he was my lifeline.” She smiles
I nodded, but I quickly changed topics.
“So, why do you need your Canadian passport?”
“I have a wedding next month in Canada, Nkem’s cousin. I will be gone for a week.”
I don’t like the sound of being without her for a week. Never mind the fact that I’m sometimes gone for that long, but she knows I’m working.
Same way you would know she’s having fun.
That doesn’t sound good
Hypocrite much?
Yes, and I’m still not liking it.
“Why a week? Isn’t it normally two days for the wedding ceremony?”
“The family introduction slash soiree is Thursday, Traditional wedding is Friday, Church and reception is on Saturday, but Nkem and I plan to visit and hang out with a few friends for rest of the week.”
“Okay. That should be fun for you guys,” I state, knowing my tone sounds flat. I don’t like the idea of her being gone for so long.
"I hope so, because Teni will be there, and he can be a real pain," she mutters under her breath.
My attention snaps to what she said, and I can't decide if I’m happy she’s telling me or annoyed that he is going to bethere. Jealousy is already brewing in me, knowing he would be around her.
“Should I be worried of your ex trying to get back with you?”
“That should be the least of your worries. He doesn’t have yourje ne sais quoiaura.”
“Say what now?” My brows raise.
“He lacks your charm and sexiness,” she says, winking. “Getting back with him is never going to happen, but him acting like we are still a couple is what I know would happen, and I’m irritated just thinking about all the shenanigans he would try to pull.”
“Guess I should come with you then.”
“No need, I will alert Nkem, and she’ll deal with him. She can’t stand him; she danced and took me clubbing when I told her we broke up.” Her eyes express the incredulity of Nkem’s actions.
I still don’t like the idea of her being around him, but for now I won’t push.
Chapter 43
Daniel
I’m back on business and have no plans to travel for the next few days if I can manage it. My discussion with Anu about her travel still has me a little rattled. I trust her much as I don’t like the idea of her ex so close to her.
Stepping out of the court room, the one person I didn’t expect to see in a Chicago courthouse is right in front of me, standing in a perfectly practiced posture against a wall, expectant as always.
