I nod my understanding. Clearly this isn’t new.
“Okay, we’ll take his sent ride.”
She nods. I leave to get my shoes on.
She emerges a few minutes later, make-up done in black chucks. Her phone beeps with a text.
“Dave is downstairs,” she informs. I rise and follow her lead.
I want to take her hand, but I doubt she’s ready for that. I simply follow her lead and we get in the car.
“Hey, MAK,” the driver says to her. “Who’s he?” He nods towards me.
“Hi Dave—”
“I’m Daniel, her boyfriend,” I quickly interrupt. She turns a scorching stare at me, and I smile back. Like I said, we are both scared but only one of us is fighting.
“Cool,” Dave says and drives.
Our drive is quiet and almost awkward. The place is close by, and we get there soon. I follow her lead.
“See you later, MAK,” Dave yells out, and she simply waves to him.
We walk through the door before I can process my surroundings.
“My favorite girl is here; do I get a date today?” The guy behind the security door yells.
“Not today, Sean.” Her voice is low.
“Come on, MAK! I’m a great guy and you know I will treat you nice,” he says, grinning.
“Sean, if you don’t open this door in the next two seconds, I’m going to call Bebe and teach her son with Quincy how to play the piano for free, and I’ll have her call all the other baby mamas and let them know who you are shacking up with.”
Damn she’s good. She didn’t miss a beat in all the words she just said. The buzzer is immediate.
“Why you got to do me like that, MAK? I thought we are friends.” He looks defeated.
“Yes, we are when you stop talking smack,” she sneers.
“Fine, but you know I can’t let Mr. Tommy lee jones jr., go up. I don’t know him.” He points at me.
“I do, and he’s with me,” Anu says in a firm tone.
“Come on, MAK! You know it doesn't work like that.” He’s trying to hold his ground.
“Today, it does. Do you need an ID? I’m already late.” She doesn’t blink.
“Fine, just go up and I’m coming up to get all his information.”
“Fine,” she responds, and we get on the elevator.
“What was that about?” I ask.
“That was Sean being Sean.” Her response is icy, with a breathy sigh.
“Why didn’t you just tell him I’m your boyfriend?”
“And have him go on a frivolous endless rant on how that hurts him?”
