The server returns with our appetizers and drinks. I look up and notice Mrs Wu staring at me. This woman is not messing around about wanting Anu to marry her son.Tough luck lady. She’s mine. I raise my glass to her; she scoffs and turns away, making me chuckle.
“I guess Cara and I have Jordan to thank,” I say, taking some of the appetizers.
“Cara, I understand, but why do you need to thank Jordan?”
“I get to date a beautiful woman with a sexy ass; you bet your ass that I will be thanking him.”
She laughs out loud.
“Alright, awesome Lawyer, slow your roll.” She winks.
Chapter 15
ANU-Ms K
I enjoyed my date with Daniel. It was supposed to be just the flea market and Mrs Wu, but we managed to talk at length till Nkem called to ask what time I’d get to her place. Daniel looked disappointed when I told him that I couldn’t cancel on my best friend, and that we were going to catch a movie and she had bought the tickets. He dropped me off at Nkem’s and promised to let me know when he’s ready for his date.
Something tells me he’s going to milk that date and take advantage of it.
Two days later, I arrive for my lesson with Cara.
Cara practically jumped into my arms when I arrived at their home.
“Ms K, I’m so happy. Mom told me that I get twenty lessons with you, this is the best day ever.”
“Hi, Maggie,” I say to her mom.
“Hi, Makayla. Congratulations on the success of the program. You did an amazing job.”
“Thank you,” I say to her.
“Can we get started?” Cara interrupts.
“Sure,” I say and move to the piano.
“Will talk about the time later,” Maggie says and I nod.
Cara and I get to work. She’s improving and clearly practicing like I encouraged her to do. We spend the next two hours practicing. It starts to rain. I quickly wrap up with her, so I can leave before my fear and anxiety kicks in. But the slight rain changes into a downpour within minutes. This isn’t good.I checked the weather on my phone and noticed the weather has suddenly changed. Luckily, it’s not a thunderstorm, just a downpour, and I have my Sony WHnoise canceling headphones.
I sit for moment and stare at the rain beating down. I can’t drive home.
“We need to get going,” Maggie says.
“I don’t drive in the rain. Do you mind if I stay till the rain stops, please? I will just sit here” I plead. She pauses for a moment. Whatever she sees in my fearful eyes makes her take my hand in reassurance.
“Sure, you can stay in the living room. Lisa will be back soon. If the rain stops before she’s back, just lock the door when you leave.”
I breathe relief and hug her.
“Thank you so much. I won’t leave the living room. I promise.”
“It’s fine.” She smiles, reassuring me.
“I’m ready,” Cara shouts.
Maggie leads her out to the garage. I watch them pull out and take a seat in the arm rest chair that sits in the dark corner. Putting my headphones on, I sit, humming to the music to distract from the anxiety I’m feeling, until I see him in the doorway.
