“Yes, princess. They are beautiful and healthy. The nurses are cleaning them up for you.”
“I want to see them,” she faintly asks.
“In a second, princess.” I assure her.
“Now, Daniel, please. I need to hold them.” Her voice cracks.
I turn to the nurse.
“Bring the children over now,” I command.
“They are still getting cleaned,” one of the nurses’ answers without turning to me.
“I said now!” She turns, and I glare at her. “Now!” She picks up one of the babies and brings it over. I can’t tell which one it is. As she placed the baby on Anu’s chest, a small smile lights up her face.
“My baby,” she coos. I see the tears falling from her eyes. I wipe her tears. The nurse brings the second baby, and that’s when I notice they have wrapped them in blue and pink. “Ejire okin,” Anu says.
I kiss her forehead. “Thank you for making my life beautiful” I whisper. I smile, watching my beautiful family.
It all happens fast. Machines are beeping, Anu is fading. The nurses take the babies, and the doctors push me out, trying to figure out why my wife is losing consciousness. I’m fighting to stay with her, but the nurse says:
“We need to save her, and we can’t do that with you shouting. Go and watch your babies.”
“I’ll be quiet,” I plead.
“You can watch from the glass.”
I’m losing my mind as I watch them work on her. “She can’t die,” I mantra, watching as they keep working and close the blind on me.
I’m pacing when the doctor comes out. “She lost a lot of blood, she’s stable and we are transfusing blood for her now. Your children are fine.”
“Can I see her?”
“Sure.” He leads the way, as I follow him to the room, she’s in.
She looks tired. I take her hand and breath relief. Her eyes open.
“Daniel…” Her voice is weary. “Are the twins okay?”
“Yes, they are fine. And you need to rest.”
“Okay, I love you.”
“I love you too, Princess.”
I watch her sleep. Staying next to her, and thankful that all three of them pulled through, I placed the call to our families.
Weeks later, we are home with the twins, and our home is filled with laughter and joy. I take a quick glance around and see how wonderful my life has become. Her dad and my dad are holding the babies, with Cara peaking at them. Maggie and Nathan are holding hands. It turns out, since the music event, they decided to work things out and my sister is open to having another child.
Derin, and my sister, Sarah, are talking. Jordan, Andrea, Nkem, Anne and Dele are talking. Aaron is trying so hard to stop looking at Nkem. My brothers are busy eating the pastries, and I pull my wife to me, kissing her forehead.
“I love you, princess,” I say.
She smiles and wraps her arm around me. “Love you too, Uncle Dan.”
I burst into a happy laugh. Knowing my wife is sure to make me laugh every day of my life.
