I woke up drained with messy emotions, I doubt I slept much at all. I didn’t want to speak with Daniel yesterday for fear of saying the wrong things. It was best I kept to myself and processed all that happened last night.

The Marie lady was nice; she stayed with me. It was a quiet strength that she gave to me in that moment of turmoil.

Locking the door to my bedroom was my way of shutting Daniel out, at least for the night. I showered last night and this morning. Opening my bathroom drawer, the box of pregnancy tests pops out.

My period is ten days late. I thought maybe it was my meds, but I’ve been feeling weird and bought the box to test because Nkem suggested I could be pregnant.

I decided to take the test. The minutes waiting for the result were nail biting. When the plus sign showed, I didn’t know whether to scream for joy or let sadness overwhelm me. I don’t know if Daniel is ready for this. Solution: I picked up my phone and texted.

Me: Hey, I need to get out of town like right now.

Jordan: Are you okay?

Me: Yes, I’m fine just need a minute away.

Jordan: You are in luck, Andy and I are heading to New York.

Me: Perfect, can you send a car for me?

Jordan: Be ready in thirty minutes.

Me: I’ll be waiting outside.

Tossing the test into the bin, I pulled my small suitcase out and threw in a few items into the case. I changed into leggings and a shirt. Grabbing my slides, I quietly left the unit. Soon as the car pulled up, I turned my phone off.

I have a feeling that Daniel sometimes tracks me.

“Good morning, my lady,” shouted Jacob from the third-floor window.

“Good morning, Jacob.”

“Are you traveling?”

“Just for a few days, I’ll be back soon.”

“Have a safe trip,” his mom says, waving and pulling him back from the window.

I laugh and get in the car. The drive is straight to the air strip. I get there just as Jordan and Andrea are pulling up. As always,Andrea is excited and comes to hug me. She’s really a ‘more is merrier’ person.

We board the flight and take off for New York. Once in the air, I breathe relief that I’ve escaped Daniel for now. Nkem is currently in Canada, so he won’t look there, and he won’t be able to find Jordan, something that I know upsets him.

I get a few days to think about my pregnancy before facing him. I had some food on the flight by the time we landed and arrived at Jordan’s apartment. I’m just ready to nap again.

Until Andrea comes in.

“Hey, is something going on with you and Daniel?”

“Why do you ask?”

“For starters, he has been blowing up my phone, and he only does that when he can’t find you or your phone is off.”

“I purposely turned my phone off.” I sigh. “We had a misunderstanding yesterday and I don’t want to speak to him yet.”

“Is everything okay?” Her concern is immediate.

“Everything is fine, just not speaking to him yet.”
