They look at each other.
“Did she tell you what she was doing?”Logan finally asks.
“No, I…” I trail off.
“You didn’t give her a chance,” Logan supplies.
CJ scoffs.“What a shocker.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?”I bark.
“It’s just… you,” CJ tells me unhelpfully.
“Again, what the hell does that mean?”I snap.
“You have this whole thing where you don’t let people get close to you.It makes it hard to… be your friend.”
“Can’t imagine how it would be to date you,” Logan mumbles.
“So, what are you afraid of?That she’s going to write whatever she found at your place?”CJ asks.“Because it’s been days, and there haven’t been any articles about you.”
I pause, realizing he’s right.I’ve avoided the news since Elle left my place, afraid of what I might see.
Now, I wonder if my friends are right.I should have given Elle the benefit of the doubt.I shouldn’t have treated her the way I did.Elle has never been anything but honest and kind to me and everyone she’s come into contact with.I know that, but as soon as she got near my secret, I couldn’t think of anything else except getting her far away from me and my deep, dark secret.
I should have done so many things differently.
“Shit,” I whisper.
“Go fix this,” Logan orders.
“Yeah, because we have a game tomorrow and I want to win,” CJ adds.
“On it.”
I hurry through a shower and out to my car.I practice what I want to say on the drive over to Elle’s house, feeling confident as I park out front and walk up the cracked steps to her door.
God, she needs to move. She deserves better than this.
I knock and wait, my heart racing in my chest.I hear her moving around, and the door swings open.
Seeing Elle again after so many days has everything falling into place. My world suddenly seems right again as soon as I lay eyes on her.
“Hey,” I grunt.
“Hi,” she says flatly.
“Elle, I’m sorry.I panicked and was rude to you.I should have given you a chance to explain.”
“Yeah,” she agrees.“I’m sorry, too.I shouldn’t have snooped in the first place.”
I nod, and she smiles tightly.
“Can I come in?”I ask after a beat.
She shakes her head.“Listen, I don’t think this is a good idea.”
I tense.“What?”
