As if sensing him, Ebony glanced at him and blinked in slight surprise at his stare before giving him a smile so gentle it felt almost shy. His stomach twisted and his pulse picked up. He wanted to dissect the meaning of that smile, to return a questioning look, or just hold her stare longer, but something stopped him.
A creeping unease tingled up his spine and instinctively Cameron's eyes cut to Gavin who was staring directly at him, the familiar friendliness that usually lit his eyes disappearing. Cameron swallowed thickly as he watched the coldness seep into Gavin's icy eyes and a look of animal-like warning pass over his face.
Reluctantly, Cameron did what many guys before him had done under the weight of Gavin's icy stare—he looked away.

Chapter five
Standing at the kitchen counter, Ebony stiffened at the sound of heels coming down the hall. In front of her the espresso machine whirred and burbled, sending plumes of rich coffee aroma into the air around her. Dressed in a pair of jeans and a simple blue fitted polo, Ebony braced herself for the inevitable.
The clicking of the heels paused at the entrance of the kitchen.
"Don't tell me you're going to school like that," her mother's crisp voice coiled around Ebony like an adder.
Closing her eyes and taking a calming breath, Ebony slowly turned and smiled tightly at her mother. "Yes. A ponytail is a pretty standard style amongst high school students."
