And what made it worse were the feelings she hadn’t had in years. Painful feelings she thought she was long since past. Like a creeping vine, poisonous and smothering, loneliness slithered in, wrapping around her and planting old doubts in her head.
Who was she without Gavin?
Her dad wasn’t her dad, he was Gavin’s. Her mom didn’t want her; she made that evident time and time again throughout her life. If it came down to it, Ebony knew Whitney would choose Grant every time.
Somewhere along the way, she must have made a mistake. Because now she was right back where she started: a sad, lonely girl forced to wear a smile she didn’t feel. A stranger in her own home.
How had it come to this?
She blinked at the ceiling, willing herself not to cry.
