Peace and love and warmth wrap around me. I have the most perfect boy in the whole world.
CHAPTER 10
Eddie
The snow makes things tricky for the next couple of days. Christmas Eve morning, Daddy admits maybe we should call the friends he made to see if they can run us some supplies. We’re good on a few things, however, if this stuff doesn’t melt soon, we’re going to be cracking cans open and feasting on beans for survival.
Of course, there’s also the Little room full of baby food and snacks too. Daddy has no desire to eat the stuff in there. I’m not as averse to the idea.
Applesauce cups, pouches of mixed fruit, and crackers shaped like animals? Um, yeah. I’m all about it.
Still, I don’t think it’s enough to keep us satisfied. In a terrible twist, Daddy’s friends don’t answer when he calls.
“Maybe they don’t have good signal,” I tell him.
I’m more big than Little today, which is handy since we have to figure out this food situation. Though I’m not as nervous asDaddy, I can admit it’s worrying me that we don’t have anyone to call for help should we need it.
“Hmmm. You’re probably right. I’ll text them instead.”
A loud noise from outside draws our attention. I rush to the window with Daddy quick on my heels.
“Oh my gosh!” I squeal once I see what it is.
Two snowmobiles pull up to the front of the house. I don’t have to see their faces beneath their helmets to know exactly who it is.
“They came, Daddy. They’re here.”
When I turn to look at Bram, his jaw is hanging open. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen him this shocked—aside from my surprise arrival. That’s not the same though.
Daddy isn’t used to people showing up for him. Especially not people he doesn’t have on his payroll. I’m the only person who consistently has his back.
Or I was.
Looks like there might be two more men who care too.
Marian is the first to remove his helmet. He yells something to Link, who throws his hands up as if to say he doesn’t know the answer. I laugh at the pair’s antics.
“What are they…” Daddy’s voice trails off as they rip a cover off the back of the vehicles to reveal stacks of containers.
I can’t take it anymore. My curiosity has me rushing to the door and throwing it open.
“HEY!” I yell above the blast of wind that greets me.
Both men turn my way.
“What are you doing?!” I feel arms wrap around me, tugging me back into the cabin. “It’s freezing out there, baby. You can’t go out without anything on. Do you want to get sick?!”
I shake my head. “No, Daddy. But our friends are here.”
At my excitement, his posture loosens. “I know they are, but we need to wait for them to come to us.”
“He’s right, you know,” a voice calls from behind me. I whip around to find Marian standing there with a grin and a box in his arms. “Sorry to intrude, but you left the door open. Figured we could come on in.”
“Please do!” I wave him in as Daddy tightens his grip on me.
He’s so possessive. I love it.
Link comes in after him, his hands full of grocery bags. “We’re here to save the day.”
